Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Billy bookcase and want to align the doors carefully so that they close evenly without gaps. Unfortunately, I found that the doors often cannot be adjusted perfectly right away. Therefore, my question to you is: What techniques, tools, or tricks have worked well for you to properly align the Billy bookcase doors? I am especially interested in practical tips for adjusting the hinges and how to keep the doors stable in the long term.
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Interesting post. However, it should be kept in mind that the Billy shelves are not high-end furniture due to their construction.
This is an important point – I recommend adjusting the doors with a minimal gap so they don’t warp. Also, have you considered if adding thin wooden shims behind the hinges might help with additional adjustment? This can compensate for any inaccuracies in the shelving unit.
Furthermore, environmental factors should not be overlooked: moisture and temperature fluctuations can affect wood-based materials and cause the alignment to shift over time.

Typical mistake: pressing the doors too firmly against the cabinet edge, which leads to stress.

Hey!
I really like the tips shared here, especially the one about the felt pads :-) Another trick that always helps me is gently tapping the doors after adjusting them – it might sound odd, but it works wonders to "settle" the hinges a bit. This usually helps them stay in position better.
Also, if you’re up for some fun, turn it into a little challenge – aiming to perfectly align every door! It keeps motivation high, even when things get stuck 😉
Good luck!
