izzynoHello everyone, I am planning to use our IKEA Platsa furniture for the children’s room but want to make it as child-friendly as possible. My question is: What specific steps can help make IKEA Platsa furniture safer and more functional for children? I am especially interested in aspects such as stability, reducing harmful substances, edge protection, and practical use for children of different ages. What are your experiences or proven methods to ensure this furniture is both durable and safe for everyday use with children? I look forward to your tips and detailed recommendations.
I would recommend first securely anchoring all furniture to the wall. Additionally, corner protectors are important to prevent injuries. I always use low-emission paint or sealant to improve air quality. It is also practical to choose handles that are easy to reach, so children can access their belongings independently.
Interesting how you approach the question of child-friendly design for the IKEA PLATSA furniture.
I usually question how truly safe the standard versions are in terms of durability. Simply attaching edge protectors or securing the furniture to the wall is often not enough. The furniture is modular and made of thin wooden panels – which means the load-bearing capacity needs to be checked. Without material improvements or reinforcements, children could still risk injury while playing roughly.
That’s a good point, but it is also necessary to carefully check the finishes used – not all are truly emission-free.
My recommendation: Before use, conduct a thorough inspection of the furniture for low emissions and stability under load, possibly adding reinforcement elements. So it’s not just about simple add-ons, but rather a comprehensive safety concept.

Hey, I also adapted the PLATSA system for our kids’ room – and yes, child-friendly is one thing, practical is another 😉
Here are some things that worked really well for us:
- Soft silicone edge protectors instead of harder plastic ones; these are truly “cushy” and provide good cushioning
- The shelves were additionally fitted with small, child-safe locks so the doors don’t easily swing open during rough play and fingers don’t get pinched
- Once my little rascal tried to pull himself up on a loose board – that’s why we installed extra sturdy metal anchors under the furniture, making everything rock solid!
- The handles were replaced with larger, kid-appropriate ones so they aren’t too small to grip
This whole makeover instantly made the room calmer and safer – and yes, a little attention to detail is priceless here! 🙂

I also recommend installing door and drawer locks, especially on furniture in children’s rooms, to reduce the risk of finger injuries. While the PLATSA series offers modular flexibility, it is important to regularly check all connection points, as modular systems can loosen over time.
As an additional safety measure, I suggest treating the materials with a non-toxic protective finish or using natural oils to make the surface more durable and free of harmful substances.
This way, you achieve a practical and safe setup that makes everyday life with children easier.

I would like to systematically discuss how to make IKEA PLATSA furniture child-friendly. For me, it is important to consider several aspects together:
- Ensure stability: Always mount the furniture with appropriate wall anchors to prevent tipping. It is essential to strictly follow the assembly instructions.
- Add edge protection: Additional padding or foam edge guards help prevent injuries from bumps.
- Check for harmful substances: IKEA products are generally safe, but especially in children's rooms, applying extra finishes or oils can reduce potential emissions and make the surface more durable.
- Choose handles carefully: Larger, non-slip handles make it easier for children to use.
- Arrange the interior in a child-appropriate way: Install shelves and drawers at heights accessible to children so they can reach them independently.
- Add safety features: Child safety locks for doors and drawers prevent unintended opening.
By consistently addressing these points, you create a child-friendly, functional, and safe environment with the PLATSA furniture.
