Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question: “Which replacement parts for IKEA Malm furniture are most commonly needed and frequently ordered or replaced?”

I’m particularly interested in common issues and wear parts that occur with Malm dressers or beds, preferably from those of you with experience in DIY repairs. Are there typical replacement parts that tend to fail repeatedly?

It would also be helpful if you could briefly describe whether the replacement is difficult or if there are parts that are hard to find.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

For stability issues, back panels and screws are often purchased additionally. The back panels made of thin chipboard tend to break more frequently with Malm. Replacements can be easily ordered.

Nice, specific question! From my experience, there are definite “trouble spots” in the MALM, for example the rails, which as mentioned often stick or break.

And the chrome trim – sometimes it gets damaged after extended use and doesn’t look good anymore. Replacements are available, but I’d say the replacement process is more enjoyable once you’ve figured out how to do it properly.

That's true, it happens quite frequently, especially when the dresser is moved. Replacement parts are easy to obtain and inexpensive.

One more tip: the floor supports, which are the small holders for floorboards, tend to break easily. They can be replaced, but are often overlooked.

Thanks for all the quick responses so far!

It would be interesting to know how you order replacement parts – directly from IKEA, through third-party suppliers, or only after some searching?

And if anyone has experienced a defect that was particularly difficult to fix – what was it? I’m asking because I need to replace drawer slides and wonder if I’m capable of doing it myself.

In my experience, it was mostly IKEA, since the official parts fit best and the instructions are clear. I only used third-party suppliers when looking for more affordable alternatives.

As for the rails, I can understand feeling uncertain – but with a bit of patience, they are quite manageable to replace.
