Hello everyone, I am interested in which replacement parts for Billy shelves can be easily replaced by oneself without much effort. Specifically, I mean parts that can be dismantled and replaced without requiring special tools or professional skills. I am mainly concerned with common wear points or damaged components such as screws, shelves, or possibly the back panels. Has anyone had experience with which parts are simple and safe to replace and if there are any tips on the correct procedure?

Plastic feet can usually be replaced without any problems. Exactly! I once lost the foot on a BILLY shelf, clicked, ordered a new one, and just put it on. 🙂 Small things like this often make a big difference, because otherwise the shelf becomes wobbly.
One more tip: When you change the shelves, put a towel or blanket underneath first to prevent scratches when removing and reinserting them. It saved me from trouble once.
I see the issue from a slightly different perspective. The importance of original parts should not be underestimated, especially for BILLY shelves, which rely on precise fit due to their modular design.
For many of these parts, particularly shelves and back panels, a poorly fitting replacement can affect the stability of the entire unit. Therefore, it is advisable to use only original replacement parts from IKEA and to critically assess any modifications or DIY solutions.
Replacing screws is generally not problematic, but it is important to use the correct diameter and appropriate material to avoid damage from excessive stress. Especially with shelf rails, I find it problematic to use improvised parts, as these can quickly reduce load-bearing capacity.
It would be interesting to know how this works out in everyday use – in some cases, the “simple replacement” could lead to problems later on.
