Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase that I want to customize and repair. I noticed that there can be significant differences in the availability of replacement parts. My question to the community is: In your experience, which replacement parts for the Billy bookcase are the hardest to get when you want to replace individual shelves, back panels, connector fittings, or other specific components?

I am especially interested to know if you are aware of certain parts that can only be obtained directly from Ikea or are even considered discontinued, and whether there are alternative sources to get them.

Thanks for your insights!

Thank you for your insights on connectors and back panels.

In summary, the most difficult to find seem to be:

- Back panels as individual pieces, often only sold in sets
- Shelves with special cutouts and custom dimensions
- Original connectors, especially Minifix fasteners

From your experience, are these available for all production years or models of BILLY? Or do older and newer versions each present different challenges?

The issue with production years is crucial. Over time, Ikea has released several versions of the BILLY shelving unit with varying dimensions and types of connectors. Older models, from around the 1980s or 1990s, use different fittings compared to current models from about 2015 onwards.

Therefore, original replacement parts for older shelves are particularly difficult to obtain because they are often no longer produced and are not compatible with new parts.

Is this, in your view, problematic for all production years or models differently?

Yes, older models are generally harder to source replacement parts for.

I would like to add: For newer models, Ikea sometimes states that replacement parts are available up to 5 years after production ends – this no longer applies to older models.

Therefore, I recommend that if you have a BILLY shelf older than 10 years, you should definitely secure possible replacement parts at the time of purchase.

Great, this helps me a lot, thank you!

So I will proceed with the following steps:

1) Take exact measurements of the floor and back panel
2) Contact Ikea customer service regarding availability of the original parts
3) Obtain alternative back panels and, if necessary, cut them myself
4) Research and compare connecting fittings online if needed

Thanks again for the detailed discussion!
