Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Hemnes dresser from Ikea and plan to use it long-term. I have a question: Based on your experience, which replacement parts are most commonly needed or prone to damage in Ikea Hemnes dressers? I’m especially interested in which components typically show wear or need to be replaced over time—such as drawer slides, handles, back panels, or other parts.

I want to handle this as proactively as possible to plan repairs in advance. Does anyone have specific experience with replacement parts for Hemnes dressers? Which parts are particularly important, which can be easily reordered if needed, and are there any tips on where to find high-quality replacement parts? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Great question! Hemnes dressers are indeed very popular, but like many pieces of furniture, some parts can start to cause issues over time.

With my Hemnes, I mainly had to deal with the drawer slides. The rollers or glides wear out eventually since the drawers are used quite regularly.

For me, those were the first components I replaced. The handles can also loosen or get damaged, especially if there are children in the house! But usually, that can be easily fixed with the right screws or new handles. So if you want to prepare: keep an eye on the drawer slides and handles – these are parts Ikea often still supplies as replacement parts, or you can easily find compatible alternatives.

All in all, don’t be intimidated by this kind of project; it’s definitely manageable! Keep at it and good luck 🙂

That’s true; the drawer runners are indeed the parts that experience the most stress and are therefore the most likely to show wear.

In addition to the drawer mechanism, the back panel of the chest of drawers can sometimes be an issue. Especially with older Hemnes models, this panel can be a bit thin and may eventually come loose or break, particularly if the chest is moved. Usually, this can be repaired quite easily or you can order a replacement back panel.

:
- Drawer runners (rollers, tracks)
- Handles (often become loose or broken)
- Back panel (especially on older models)
- Wooden dowels/connecting pins (these small wooden pieces used during assembly can break)

Ikea sometimes offers spare parts directly in their store, but it’s also worthwhile to contact customer service if needed – they may be able to help with specific parts even if they are no longer part of the regular range.

If you need spare parts, I recommend having the exact product type and, if possible, the year of manufacture or the article number of your Hemnes chest ready, as this makes the search much easier.

I think the Hemnes chest of drawers is a kind of “friendly classic” among furniture – reliable, but also with typical weak spots that actually make life easier once you know where to look. 😉

I completely agree. A great tip that helped me: regularly check all the screws and lubricate the drawer slides a bit. This noticeably extends their lifespan.

Also, I once had a small issue with the handles – not because they were broken, but because one came off while opening the drawer. Ordered new ones without any hassle and replaced them in just a few minutes. 😎

One more tip: if you move the chest around often, the back panel can get damaged quickly. It’s not very sturdy on the Hemnes, so be careful when relocating it.

Overall: sure, there are some parts that need replacing more often, but that’s okay. With a little care and maintenance, this piece really lasts a long time!
