Hello everyone,

I am currently repairing an Ikea Hemnes dresser, which has some issues mainly with a few drawers. I have noticed that Ikea’s spare parts supply is somewhat confusing. Therefore, I am interested in which replacement parts for the Hemnes dressers, based on your experience, are the most important.

The focus of my question is on the components that tend to wear out or show defects most frequently, such as drawer runners, drawer slides, handles, or hinges.

Any tips on common weak points that can be effectively fixed with spare parts would also be helpful. Especially considering that the Hemnes series is often solidly built but still shows signs of wear over time.

I hope someone here has a good sense of the most durable yet critical replacement parts and can provide advice on the exchange process so I can order and repair efficiently. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Good question, Jannis0!

I often work with HEMNES dressers, so here is a structured overview:

- Drawer slides/runners: These are the most common parts to wear out. If the drawers are hard to open or stick, the chrome gliders or plastic rollers at the ends are usually damaged. Replacing them works wonders.
- Handles: Although sturdy, wear is often visible here, especially on white painted models. Replacement handles are easy to swap and affordable.
- Hinges: The foldable or removable front panels often become misaligned or stop working smoothly. New hinges provide better stability.
- Screws and special connectors: Small but often tricky to replace. Pay attention to the original dimensions, as Ikea uses specially shaped connectors.

Tip: Sometimes it’s worth ordering several drawer slides at once – they are inexpensive and durable, especially if the dresser is older.

When replacing parts, make sure to use original components – generic parts rarely fit perfectly and can affect functionality.

This is how you can often fully repair the HEMNES and restore it to like-new function.

I completely agree. Additionally, I would like to discuss this topic from a technical perspective:

Many drawers in the HEMNES dresser use full-extension slides, where the weight rests on plastic or metal rollers. The stress and friction, especially in older models, cause wear in the sliding guides. If these are not replaced in time, the drawers can become loose or jam.

Furthermore, corrosion or material fatigue often occurs on the connecting elements such as screws when the dresser is placed in more humid locations. Replacement screws and connectors are essential in these cases to restore stability.

Regarding the handles: The coating often wears off in high-use areas. Replacing them is not only visually beneficial but also prevents scratches on the surface caused by roughened handles.

My advice: When replacing the drawer slides, make sure to choose the exact model variant, as Ikea uses different slide mechanisms in various HEMNES versions. Choosing the wrong type can cause malfunctions or jamming.

In general, I recommend thoroughly inspecting the dresser before purchasing replacement parts and, if necessary, measuring individual damaged components. This helps to avoid ordering the wrong items.

I completely agree – ordering the wrong replacement part will turn your project into more of a construction site than a dresser! 😅

What I’d like to add is the good old tip: drawer slides and handles are obviously important, but don’t forget the small, inconspicuous components!

- Stoppers and dampers: If your drawers slam loudly, it’s often the small damping parts that are easy to replace and make the whole thing feel much more premium.
- Adjustable feet: If you’re aiming for a long-term fix, feet can deform over time and cause wobbling. Replacement feet significantly improve stability.

Sometimes it’s the small details that really make a difference for the comfort and durability of the HEMNES – and they often cost next to nothing compared to the hassle you’ll have if you ignore them.

So: don’t forget those small, often overlooked parts when you want to get your dresser back in shape!
