Hello everyone, I’m planning to assemble an Ikea Platsa cabinet soon and want to make the process as smooth as possible. I’m especially interested in which small tools or aids you use to make the assembly easier—whether for securing parts, handling individual modules, or achieving the best alignment.

Maybe you have practical tips or “secret weapons” that aren’t typically associated with assembling Ikea furniture but definitely make a difference. Recommendations for tools that make the process more ergonomic or save time are also welcome.

Which small helpers make assembling the Ikea PLATSA easier?

To be honest: Who really needs all that stuff? Ikea has designed the parts so that you hardly need any tools.

That is partly true, but using some aids can make assembly faster and safer, especially with larger modules like Platsa. Without a second person, handling some cabinet parts is quite difficult.

@KUDAISY, could you please explain exactly which clamps you mean? And do you have any ideas about which tools might be particularly helpful for one-person assembly?

I usually use simple screw clamps from the hardware store, preferably with soft plastic jaws to avoid pressure marks on the surface. These are helpful for holding frames or parts together temporarily before driving in the screws. This is especially practical when working alone.

Another useful option is clamp strips or toggle clamps, which can be used to hold small panels or shelves in place. For one-sided assembly, a wide strap (e.g., a ratchet strap) can be helpful to compress modules together before securing everything.

A cordless screwdriver is truly invaluable. Anyone trying to build without one will need patience. And a good light to clearly see the small screws.

Anything that makes handling easier is helpful. A thick carpet or blanket is very useful to prevent scratches and to keep the boards from slipping. For the small dowels, a screwdriver with a magnetic tip is helpful.

A small tip: When driving in screws, you can also use a magnetic bit holder. This helps the screws stick well to the screw head.

It saves a lot of fumbling and time.

Clamps to hold parts together while screwing

I agree with that. Especially with the PLATSA modules, many parts are made from lightweight pressed board, and holding them steady can be difficult when working alone.

I also recommend laying out and sorting all the parts before starting the assembly – this speeds up the building process later on.
