Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an IKEA Platsa shelving system and would like to use higher-quality screws instead of the ones provided. My question is: which screws work best for IKEA PLATSA in terms of stability, ease of assembly, and long-term durability? I am particularly interested in the type and material of the screws, their length and diameter, as well as suitable screw types that match the supplied engineered wood materials without causing damage. It would also be helpful if someone could explain any special recommendations, for example when working with particleboard or MDF, which are often used in PLATSA models. Thank you in advance for your expert advice and experiences!

It is important to drill a pilot hole of about 3 mm (1/8 inch) before screwing in, to protect the material. That sounds like an important tip – it wasn’t entirely clear from my research. Does the pilot hole always need to be deeper than the length of the screw? Or is it sufficient if it matches the screw’s insertion depth?
Also, I’m curious whether different screws are better suited for the back panel of the Platsa, which is usually thinner, compared to the load-bearing sides and shelves.

The pilot hole should be at least as deep as the full length of the screw to prevent the material from splitting and to ensure the screw grips precisely. It is also important that the diameter of the pilot hole is smaller than that of the screw—typically about 60-70% of the screw diameter.

For thinner back panels, smaller screws with a shorter thread (e.g., 3.5 x 25 mm (0.14 x 1 inch)) are suitable, often with flat heads or special pan-head screws that do not damage the thin material but still provide sufficient holding power.

Back panels often use thinner screws (3.5 x 30 mm (1/8 x 1 1/4 inches)) or even special panel pins or clips to prevent cracking in the thin boards. These should not be omitted, as the back panel system plays a key role in the stability of the shelving unit.
