Hello everyone, I am currently planning the wall mounting for my new IKEA Besta shelving unit and want to make sure I use the optimal screws and wall anchors. My wall is partly concrete and partly drywall, so I need to consider different types of surfaces. My question is: Which screws and anchors are best suited for mounting the IKEA Besta to ensure stability on both types of walls? I am especially interested in recommendations regarding screw size, anchor type, and maximum load capacity to make sure the shelf remains secure even when fully loaded. Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are any specific precautions or installation tips that can improve the hold or prevent damage to the wall.

I use 6mm (1/4 inch) screws with 8mm (5/16 inch) anchors in concrete and metal anchors in drywall. It is important that the screw and anchor fit well together; otherwise, the whole setup won’t hold.

Best option: 8 mm (5/16 inch) anchors + 6 mm (1/4 inch) screws for concrete. For drywall, use hollow wall anchors, e.g., metal toggle bolts. Pay attention to the maximum load capacity specified by the manufacturer.

According to the manufacturer, the load capacity of the IKEA Besta shelf is usually up to around 20 kg (44 lbs) per shelf.

That’s important information, thanks! I’ll plan on roughly 100 kg (220 lbs) per anchor if I use multiple fixing points per wall.

Maybe it also helps to do a test with one screw first before fully mounting everything.

That sounds like a good tip to avoid unnecessary holes. Thanks!

I have a follow-up question: How rigid should the screwdriver be, and what torque should roughly be applied to the anchors in concrete? I want to avoid deforming the anchors or having them sit too loosely.
