Hello everyone, I am planning to upgrade my IKEA BESTÅ unit and want to install new doors. However, I am unsure which screws are best suited for this.
Specifically, it concerns attaching the doors to the hinges, as IKEA often uses special or at least non-standard screws. What sizes and thread types would be best if I, for example, replace or upgrade the doors myself?
Are self-tapping screws recommended, or is it better to use screws made of a certain material or with a specific coating? Also, I am interested in whether the screws should ideally have a particular length and diameter to ensure stability and a clean appearance.
Does anyone have experience with this or can offer specific recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Be careful not to overtighten the screws, or you might warp the doors.Absolutely! This is often underestimated. If you’re too eager with the cordless drill, the material compresses and the door ends up misaligned. It’s better to work gradually and carefully.
Also: Sometimes the original IKEA hinges are a bit flimsy, so upgrading to sturdier screws can help.
Oh, and one more tip: when retrofitting, you can also use screws commonly available at hardware stores as replacements for furniture. As long as the dimensions and coating match, they usually work fine.
