Hello everyone, I recently modified my Billy bookshelf and noticed that some of the original screws need to be replaced due to rust and material fatigue. Now I’m wondering which screws can be used as replacements for the Billy to ensure the shelf’s stability and safety. It’s important to me that the replacement screws match in size, length, and thread type, and are also compatible with the material of the shelf—I obviously don’t want to use screws that could damage the wood or don’t provide the necessary load-bearing capacity. Does anyone have experience with suitable replacement screws for Billy bookshelves or can offer specific recommendations? It would also be helpful to know if there are alternatives that are even more durable than the original screws. Thanks in advance!
Hello kapu5, I completely understand your concern; it’s always a bit tricky when looking for replacement parts for furniture that aren’t exactly the same. The Billy shelves from IKEA are usually made of fairly thin chipboard, so the screws shouldn’t have threads that are too coarse, or the wood can split easily.
From my own experience, I recommend screws with a diameter of 4 mm (0.16 inches) and a length of about 30 mm (1.2 inches) for most connections. It’s important that the threads are not too coarse, so it’s better to use fine threads, as they hold better in the wood.
I can confirm that as well – stainless steel screws, for example, don’t rust and last much longer than regular screws, especially if you set up the furniture in a more humid room. I once bought a pack of such screws, and they work perfectly in my Billy. Hope this helps! 🙂

baAlejandr13 Dec 2022 11:06Kapu5, I would like to add that when it comes to replacement screws for Billy shelves, the most important factors are the thread length and the correct material. Billy shelves are typically made of particleboard and have screws specifically optimized for this material.
For replacements, I recommend metric screws in M4 or M5 with a full thread, as partial threads often do not provide enough grip.
Additionally, galvanized or stainless steel screws are ideal, especially when it comes to load-bearing capacity and durability.
If you ask for comparable screws at the hardware store, it is best to specify "particleboard screws" with these dimensions. They are specially designed to prevent splitting and ensure a secure hold.
That’s correct – fine threads are preferable to coarse threads in particleboard because they cause less damage to the wood.

Regarding replacement screws for Billy shelves, it should be noted that IKEA typically uses chipboard screws with the following specifications:
- Diameter: 4 mm (M4)
- Length: Usually 30–40 mm (1.2–1.6 inches), depending on the connection
- Thread type: Fine thread to ensure better grip in the wood
Using stainless steel, rust-resistant screws is recommended if the shelf is placed in more humid environments. The screw’s load capacity should match the size of the shelves and the weight they need to support.
A safe alternative is countersunk head screws, as they sit flush and do not create stress in the wood.
Additionally, it is advisable to check replacement screws carefully against the original dimensions (diameter, length, head size). Many hardware stores offer suitable replacements under the terms "chipboard screws" or "furniture screws."
One recommendation: always test replacement screws before installation to ensure they can be tightened easily without damaging the wood. This helps avoid damage to the shelf.

Hello kapu5!
I also once looked for replacement screws for my Billy and was really happy when I found some that were even better than the originals!
I can definitely confirm that! I specifically got some with a slightly thicker shaft (4.5 mm (0.18 inches)) and they hold really firmly. Plus, they go in much easier without splitting the particleboard.
A tip from me: If you often rearrange or reassemble the shelf, try screws with a combination Phillips and Torx head – they allow you to work much more precisely without damaging the screw head. Really great! 🙂
I wish you the best of luck and don’t worry, you’ll do great!
