Hello everyone! I am about to install my new Ikea Metod wall cabinets and want to make sure I use the right screws for mounting. The cabinets will be hung on a load-bearing wall, but Ikea only provides generic screws that, in my opinion, are not optimal. My main question is: Which screws are best suited for mounting Ikea Metod wall cabinets to ensure stability and safety? I am also interested in details such as screw type, length, diameter, and what to look for when buying – especially if I have different wall materials like concrete or drywall. Maybe you have tips on special types of anchors and screws that are particularly recommended for this furniture series. Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hello pobla, I’m happy to provide you with a structured answer:

1. Screw length and diameter for mounting into solid concrete:
- Yes, 6 mm diameter is very good, and a length between 70 and 90 mm (3 to 3.5 inches) is recommended. This allows for good penetration into the anchor and sufficient hold.

2. Anchor type:
- Heavy-duty anchors such as metal expansion anchors or high-quality plastic ring anchors with expansion function are ideal. These are specifically designed to hold reliably under loads, like those from wall cabinets.

3. Screw head and drive type:
- Torx is definitely better than Phillips when it comes to torque transmission. Torx reduces cam-out, making tightening safer and easier.

4. Material:
- For kitchens, which can be slightly damp, stainless steel (A2 or preferably A4) or zinc-plated steel with additional corrosion protection is recommended. Stainless steel is more durable and less prone to rust stains on the wall.

5. Installation:
- Pre-drilling with a drill bit sized according to the anchor’s marking is important to ensure the anchor sits correctly.

Conclusion: For your solid wall, you should choose heavy-duty anchors combined with 6x80 mm (1/4x3 inches) stainless steel screws with Torx drive. This way you will be on the safe side!

Do you specifically recommend heavy-duty anchors combined with 6 mm (1/4 inch) particle board screws approximately 80 mm (3 inches) long?

Yes, exactly like that. Additionally, here’s an important practical tip: avoid particle board screws with coarse threads and instead use fine-thread screws designed for metal fastening. These increase the clamping force and reduce the risk of the screw loosening.

What about the type of screw head? Is a Phillips head standard here, or is a Torx preferred for installation?

Torx clearly has the advantage. It minimizes cam-out and stripping, especially when high torque is needed, for example when mounting heavy cabinets.

Are there any practical experiences on whether the screw material (e.g. stainless steel vs. galvanized steel) makes a difference in durability, especially in more humid rooms like the kitchen?

Stainless steel is the better choice, particularly in kitchens where moisture is often underestimated. Galvanized screws can rust over time, which not only looks bad but also compromises stability.

I completely agree: for a concrete wall, use 6x80mm (3x3 1/8 inches) screws with heavy-duty anchors and Torx heads. Stainless steel is excellent for kitchens, durable and rust-resistant.

Great topic here! I can only confirm what others are saying: with the right screws and anchors, you won’t waste time on adjustments. I installed my Metod wall cabinets last year using 6mm (1/4 inch) Torx stainless steel screws and heavy-duty anchors – they have held firmly ever since! Just stay calm during installation and pre-drill properly.

Good luck, it will turn out great!

For installation: 6 mm stainless steel Torx screws with a length of 80 mm (3 inches), combined with suitable heavy-duty anchors for concrete. Use drywall only with special cavity anchors.
