Hello everyone,

I am currently considering the Ikea Platsa cabinet system and looking closely at the screws used. My question to the community is specifically: Which screws in the Ikea Platsa system are particularly durable and resistant, especially if the furniture is frequently reassembled or subjected to heavy use?

I am mainly interested in the types of screws (e.g., wood screws, cam locks, dowels), their quality compared to similar products, and any potential weak points that could quickly cause problems in everyday use. Has anyone had experience with which screws can be used without concern and for which models or screw types it might be better to take precautions, such as having replacements on hand or using stronger alternatives?

I would appreciate concrete tips and experiences so that I am well prepared before purchase and assembly. Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Hi Jimmy63!

Great that you’re asking this question in detail – it’s definitely a topic that’s often underestimated! From my experience with the Platsa screws, the standard wood screws that Ikea provides are okay, but they tend to wear out or loosen quite quickly, especially with frequent reassembly or when the furniture is under heavier load. 😕

In my opinion, the best are the so-called cam fittings that Platsa uses – they hold very securely when assembled correctly!

I have partly replaced the screws with thicker, high-quality replacement screws, especially for the load-bearing parts. That really makes a difference. So: don’t hesitate to use stronger screws!

Do you have any other tips, everyone? 😀

Hello Jimmy63,

I would like to provide a more detailed response to your question, as the durability of screws used in Ikea Platsa furniture actually depends on several factors.

1. Types of screws:
- Wood screws: These are usually standardized and intended for cabinet assembly. They tend to be relatively thin, with a thread profile optimized for plywood or MDF.
- Cam lock screws: Often used for secure connections between furniture parts, these are made of metal, providing high tensile strength.
- Dowels: Wooden or plastic dowels are used as additional reinforcement.

2. Screw quality:
Ikea screws are generally average quality – sufficient for normal use, but they may wear out quickly with frequent moving or heavy loads.

3. Weak points:
- Over-tightening wood screws can cause material fatigue in the wood, especially in particleboard.
- While cam locks themselves are stable, the accompanying wood screws that hold them are often the weak link.

If you prioritize durability, I recommend:
- Using thicker wood screws with a better thread profile (e.g., full thread and hardened steel) for load-bearing connections.
- Ensuring cam lock screws fit tightly and having metal replacement screws available if needed.

I would like to know more precisely: How often do you plan to disassemble or move the furniture? Different usage patterns call for different recommendations.

Good point, thanks! At the moment, I plan to rearrange or move the furniture about 1-2 times per year. So it won’t be constant but happens regularly. Additionally, the furniture should be able to carry somewhat heavier items, like kitchen utensils and electronics.

I assume some wear and tear is normal, but I would prefer not to have to buy new screws every 1-2 years or have the parts become unstable. Are there screw types that are especially recommended for this “medium” level of use?

Looking forward to more opinions!

Regarding the question of screw durability with Ikea Platsa, I can contribute the following based on my research and experience with similar modules:

- Most Ikea system furniture uses standardized cam lock or connector fittings combined with wood screws designed for MDF/particleboard materials.

- The original wood screws are sufficient for static loads but are not optimized for repeated assembly and disassembly. In such cases, the wood material around the screw wears out, and the threads can loosen.

- Replacing them with screws of a larger diameter (e.g., 4–5 mm, instead of the standard 3.5–4 mm) made of alloy steel significantly improves durability. However, attention must be paid to the length and head shape of the screws to ensure a secure fit.

- Cam locks are mechanically robust; their weak point is often the anchoring in the wood (the screws holding the cam locks).

For your regular use (reconfiguring 1–2 times a year, moderate load), high-quality stainless steel or zinc-plated screws matched precisely to the panel thickness are recommended.

This helps prevent rust and material fatigue.

In summary:
- Standard wood screws are sufficient for light use
- For long-lasting, frequent use, consider higher-quality replacement screws

If you wish, I can provide exact type designations and sizes.

That’s exactly my experience as well! The cam connectors themselves are excellent, but especially if you disassemble and reassemble the panels frequently, the small screws holding the cams tend to loosen. In my opinion, the best solution is replacement screws made of metal with a slightly larger thread profile.

It’s worth not relying solely on original parts but also checking out alternatives at your local hardware store. Quality beats quantity!

And don’t get discouraged—the system is great, you just need to put in a little effort 🙂
