Hello everyone,

I am currently in the process of reassembling my IKEA Platsa wardrobe, and I noticed that the instructions include different types of screws. My question is: Which of the screws used in the IKEA Platsa system are considered especially durable and strong for long-term stability and load-bearing capacity?

I want to avoid screws loosening or breaking over time since I mainly use the wardrobe for storing heavy equipment and books. Does anyone have experience with whether the included wood screws, particleboard screws, or perhaps the cam lock screws are particularly resilient? Or would it be better to use a specific type of screw from a hardware store to increase durability?

I look forward to your expert opinions and tips, including any recommendations regarding screw sizes or materials.

IKEA Platsa furniture is usually made from particleboard and uses different types of screws.

Cam lock or connector bolts are primarily designed to join the individual panels and rarely loosen under high stress. They are made of hardened metal and are very durable. Wood screws and particleboard screws, however, are more prone to expansion or loosening, especially under heavy load.

If you need high load capacity, it is essential not only to tighten the screws properly but also to use the appropriate wall anchors. It also helps to retighten the screws occasionally.

If in doubt—especially with heavy loads—you can opt for higher-quality screws from a hardware store, but this requires selecting the correct size and type.

I would like to add the following:

- IKEA primarily uses flat-head Spax screws combined with anchors for load-bearing capacity in the Platsa system.
- The cam locks are part of a cam-lock mechanism that relies on a precise, form-fitting connection rather than pure screw retention.
- For long-lasting durability, it is advisable to use screws with reinforced thread tips at critical points, as they grip particle board better.

Those using the cabinet for heavy loads should choose screws with a galvanized finish to prevent corrosion. Although the IKEA screws generally have this treatment, they are not comparable to the most durable materials available.

In conclusion: The original cam locks are durable, but for securing shelves and load-bearing components, the wood screws are often the weakest point.

I can only agree with that. The cam screws are designed to provide a strong hold and are made of hardened steel, which makes them durable. However, the supplied wood screws are often made of softer material and tend to pull out more easily, especially if the cabinet is moved or rearranged frequently.

If you want to increase durability, I would recommend using high-quality wood screws with full threading and possibly pre-drilling. This significantly reduces material damage and loosening.

I think this is often overrated. Of course, upgrading can make sense for heavy use, but IKEA aims to offer an affordable piece of furniture that is not designed as a permanent solution for heavy loads.

Screws alone don’t hold anything if the surrounding material doesn’t cooperate. The panels are not solid wood but particleboard. No matter how strong the screw is, eventually the material will fail. If you want real durability, you should consider additional reinforcements, such as metal brackets, more dowels, or even different types of dowels (metal instead of plastic).

Claiming that there are "particularly durable screws" in the IKEA set is too simplistic for me. The original screws are designed for standard use—not for extreme loads.

A somewhat lighter perspective: Amid all the screw-related stress, don’t forget – IKEA Platsa is quite well-designed, and the screws are of adequate quality for the construction. 😊

On the topic of durability:

- The cam locks are basically the stars of the system; they really hold well.
- For wood screws, it’s best to screw them in gently, not too tight, so they don’t strip out.
- If you’re worried, just use screws from the hardware store that cost a few cents more—it won’t hurt.

And honestly: for normal household use, Platsa’s screws are absolutely sufficient. So no need to panic, but putting a little care into the assembly surely won’t hurt anyone. 😉
