Hello everyone,

I am planning a reinforcement modification for my Ikea Besta shelving system to improve its load-bearing capacity. I have a question: which screws are particularly recommended for reinforcing Ikea BESTA?

I am looking for screws that not only provide high strength but also work well with the materials and construction of BESTA. Additionally, I am interested in dimensions, materials, and possible screw head types to make attaching the reinforcements as simple and secure as possible.

Does anyone have experience with specific screws or recommendations that are especially suitable for this purpose? Tips on which screws to avoid to prevent damage to the wood or joints are also welcome.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

Have you had any experience with special thread types (e.g., full-thread vs. partial-thread) in Besta reinforcement?

That’s a very good question. For the MDF and particleboard panels used in Besta, I definitely recommend screws with partial threading because they provide better tensile strength. Partial threads ensure that only the lower part of the screw pulls into the wood, while the smoother upper shaft reduces friction. This results in less stress on the material and less chance of tearing out.

Metal screws with full threads can be useful in some cases, but for particleboard-based furniture, partial-thread screws are, in my opinion, the better choice.

I have had good experiences with Spax screws, which are available in this version. Pre-drilling is also always important, as already mentioned, to minimize material stress.

If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help.
