Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Besta shelving unit and wanted to ask which screws and connectors are best suited for a particularly durable and stable connection. I am specifically looking for recommendations on components that do not loosen or lose stability even after multiple assemblies and disassemblies. It would be interesting to know if certain materials, thread types, or connection methods (e.g. dowels, cam locks, metal screws) are preferred to maximize the lifespan of the construction. If possible, please also share experiences with IKEA-specific parts or alternative fasteners that have proven to be reliable. Thank you for your expertise!

Original screws are fine, but if it needs to be taken apart frequently, it’s better to use stainless steel screws and hardwood wooden dowels.

The type of shelving construction also affects its durability. With Besta, metal hinges with sturdy connecting screws distribute the load more effectively. Positioning the connectors on stronger parts of the frame also helps prevent premature material fatigue.

Especially if you plan to disassemble it regularly, I recommend tightening the connections evenly without overtightening. This helps maintain stability over time.

I find this topic really exciting! 😊 If you want to be on the safe side, do what I do: use stainless steel connectors to significantly increase durability. You can also work very well with additional brackets at Besta to add extra stability. Just give it a try, it’s definitely worth it!

Original screws are fine, but to improve durability, you should use stainless steel screws and strong wooden dowels (beech).

There are some technical aspects that are often overlooked: for example, the tolerances of IKEA wooden dowels are quite generous, which can result in some play in the joint. One way to improve this is to slightly pre-tension the dowels with wood glue, which significantly increases the friction in the connection.

Additionally, I recommend switching to screws with a fully threaded shaft, if suitable, as they distribute tensile forces better.

One final tip: pay attention to the correct insertion depth of the cam screws, as embedding them too deeply or too shallowly can affect stability. This is especially important for frequent disassembly, as it extends the durability of the material.

One final question: Do you want the solution to be as close to the original as possible, or are you open to using alternative materials and fasteners?

I tend to prefer using very durable alternatives, even if it requires a bit more effort. A longer-lasting, secure connection is more important to me than authenticity. Therefore, details and experiences with alternative screws and anchors are very much welcome.
