Hello everyone,

I am planning to mount an Ikea Besta shelf on a wall with challenging surfaces and am unsure which screws and anchors would be best suited for this. I’m mainly referring to older buildings with uneven, porous plaster surfaces, or areas with drywall panels that are additionally covered with tiles. My requirements are that the mounting holds securely in the long term, the screws do not penetrate too deeply into the soft substrate, and the anchors provide optimal support.

Does anyone have experience with suitable screw and anchor combinations for such complicated surfaces, especially when installing BESTA shelves? Are there specific types of anchors or screws you would recommend?

I look forward to concrete advice and any suggestions for alternative mounting methods for these problematic walls. Thank you in advance!

Hello,

For challenging substrates when installing Ikea BESTA units, I recommend using heavy-duty anchors or toggle anchors, depending on the wall material:

- For porous plaster surfaces and older walls: metal toggle anchors that expand behind the wall, providing better grip.
- For drywall (plasterboard) panels, a special hollow wall anchor such as a spring toggle or toggle wing anchor is advisable.
- Screws should be at least zinc-coated and not too thick to avoid damaging the material; typically, screws with a diameter of about 5 to 6 mm (0.2 to 0.24 inches) work well.

It is important to select anchors according to the wall thickness and assess the load of the shelf before installation. Pre-drilling with a hammer drill depending on the wall type is also recommended.

If the unit stands freely in front of the wall (securely on the floor), wall mounting can sometimes be omitted or used only for additional stabilization.

This is a crucial point. When dealing with difficult substrates such as porous old plaster or tiles over drywall, a systematic approach is recommended:

- First, carefully assess the condition of the substrate, for example by making a small test drill hole in a concealed spot.
- For tiles over drywall, caution is advised: professional hollow wall anchors (such as metal toggle anchors or special multi-purpose anchors) are suitable here, as they distribute the load on the drywall more effectively.
- Screws with a diameter of 5 mm (0.2 inches) and a length of 50 to 60 mm (2 to 2.4 inches) are often optimal. Ideally, the screws should have good zinc plating or a corrosion-resistant coating.
- For old walls with porous plaster that often lacks sufficient load-bearing capacity, it is advisable to install a substructure or use chemical anchors (injection mortar). These fill cracks and provide better holding strength.

Finally, I recommend using heavy-duty anchors for mounting the BESTA shelf if the wall structure is significantly crumbly. This increases safety.

Could you provide more details about the exact wall dimensions or the maximum load? This would allow for an even more precise recommendation.

Good question. For standard BESTA shelves, a metal toggle anchor and a 5x50 mm (0.2x2 inch) screw are often sufficient. If heavy loads are expected, chemical anchors or heavy-duty anchors should be used.

The most important points:
- Pre-drill,
- choose the appropriate anchor depending on the wall type,
- use screws that are not too thin, otherwise they won’t hold.
