Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to improve the durability of Ikea Billy shelves through appropriate screwing techniques. Specifically, I want to know which fastening methods or techniques are best suited to increase the load-bearing capacity and stability of these shelves in the long term, without damaging the furniture or making assembly unnecessarily difficult. Are there any experiences with specific types of screws, screw orientations, or even torque settings that can help? Tips on how to avoid material damage when screwing would also be very helpful. I would appreciate any well-founded advice or practical tips from you!

If you pre-drill, make sure to pay attention to the correct drilling depth; otherwise, the screw will be loose.

Very important! I also sometimes use a countersink drill bit so the screw heads fit perfectly and don’t tear the wood fibers.

Additionally, for increased stability, it is recommended to secure the back panel of the shelf with screws or angle brackets. The original nails do not hold well over time, especially when transporting heavily loaded shelves or frequently rearranging them.

People often underestimate how much a good back panel attachment contributes to the overall durability.

For additional information: If you have shelves in damp areas, make sure the screws are galvanized or rust-resistant.

Rusty screws quickly cause material damage and make the shelf unstable.

Also important: Always use new screws when reassembling, as the old ones often have stretched the wood, weakening the joint.
