Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble several Billy shelves and wanted to ask the community: Which screwing techniques do you prefer when putting together Billy? I am especially interested in your approach to screwing in the screws, whether you use any special tools, aids, or specific sequences to ensure a stable and straight assembly. Tips on avoiding damage or warping are also greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your experiences!

I use a combination of a cordless drill with adjustable torque settings and manual tools. It’s important never to drive the screws in too quickly or too deep. This keeps the connection stable and the material intact.

Also, it’s worth pre-positioning the screws roughly by hand before fully tightening them.

In addition to the screw technique, proper material preparation is crucial. Before driving in the screws, I check the holes for any debris or splinters and clean them.

Pre-drilling briefly with a small drill bit (e.g., 2mm (0.08 inches)) also helps to avoid stress in the material, especially with older or partially damp chipboard.

The screws with the small Phillips bit (PH1) should first be carefully screwed in by hand.

That is correct, but I wonder if it is necessary in every case. I have often experienced that being too cautious when screwing leads to poor fit if the screws are not tight enough.

Are there any specific practical guidelines on when to start by hand and when using a cordless screwdriver right away is sufficient?

For me, starting by hand is mainly a precaution with new or delicate furniture like Billy. If you already have experience and the right tool (with the torque properly set), the cordless drill can be used from the start.

The risk of damage increases mainly when applying too much force or working at an awkward angle.

The recommendation is based on the material properties of BILLY. The particle boards can only withstand limited screw-driving force. Therefore, it is advisable to begin by hand, especially with new furniture, to avoid over-tightening and splitting.

Those who are confident can use a cordless drill right away but should always set it to low torque and avoid high speeds.

Thank you very much for the contributions so far; they have been very helpful to me.

One additional question: What sequence do you follow when tightening screws? I have read that a symmetrical approach can help prevent twisting and warping of the shelving components. Have you tried this or can you confirm it?
