Hello everyone, I am currently repairing an IKEA Besta shelving unit and am looking for a screw set that is particularly suitable for typical repairs on this piece of furniture. I am mainly interested in a durable selection of screws and possibly bits that are highly recommended for connecting the different components. It would be great if the screws offer corrosion protection and include the right sizes for the most common parts (e.g., carcass, back panel, doors). Which sets or individual items have you used that provide good results when repairing IKEA Besta furniture? Thanks for any helpful recommendations and tips!

I really enjoy the discussion here, especially because it goes into such detail about the differences between screw types. For those who prefer a simpler approach: a universal screw set with various lengths in M4, plus a small Torx and Phillips head bit, makes working on the Besta super straightforward. Guaranteed without unnecessary screw mess.

A small bonus tip from me: don’t overtighten when fastening, or the furniture fabric may get damaged. And if you have a magnetic screwdriver – jackpot! This way, the screw won’t constantly fall to the floor.

For IKEA Besta, I recommend a set with a Phillips head and all common lengths, especially 4 mm (0.16 inch) diameter.

That seems too narrow to me. Why limit yourself to M4 only? If the shelf sags after a few years or you want to modify something you built yourself, screws with different diameters can be useful. A universal set including M5 screws and matching bits ensures versatility in case improvisation is needed.

In my opinion, the standard recommendation is too limited. Although Besta is modular, more flexible repairs are easier with a comprehensive toolkit.

That’s true, but you definitely need to consider the material thickness and the pre-drilled holes. Using the wrong screws can irreparably damage the furniture or cause the wood to swell.

From my experience, a set matched to Besta is usually M4, since the furniture panels are designed specifically for these dimensions. M5 works only to a limited extent and mainly for external additions. Anyone improvising should be aware of the risks.

An interesting perspective, thanks for the input! I agree that for individual repairs or modifications, using larger screws can sometimes make sense. However, the focus here is on "repairs" in the sense of replacing or retightening the original screws in the Besta system.

If larger screws are used, one should be very careful to avoid damaging the panels. In any case, I would recommend assessing the material beforehand and, if possible, working with test pieces. Safety comes first.

In summary, for anyone specifically looking for screw sets for IKEA Besta:

- Primarily use M4 screws, as these match the original specifications.
- Variants in length (30mm to 40mm) are useful, depending on the component.
- Zinc-coated or electroplated screws provide corrosion protection.
- A bit set with Torx 20 and Phillips PH2 fits ideally.
- Optional: a torque wrench to check the tightening torque and prevent material damage.

These points ensure a durable repair without risks to the wood material or the stability of the furniture.
