ᐅ Which types of screws are the most durable for Ikea Besta units?

Hello everyone, I have been looking into the construction and stability of Ikea Besta furniture for some time, focusing specifically on the types of screws used in these units. My specific question is: Which types of screws, either standard with the Ikea Besta system or recommended as alternatives, are considered especially strong and thus best suited when reinforcing the structure or ensuring the shelves and cabinets can carry heavier loads? I am thinking about different screw shapes, materials, or other fasteners. I am interested in experiences and recommendations, including those related to forces such as vibration or lateral loads.

Cam connectors are rather secondary for stability. For load-bearing connections, it is better to use coarse stainless steel chipboard screws, at least 40mm (1.6 inches) long. This increases the tensile strength.

The screws supplied by Ikea are mainly designed to allow easy assembly of the furniture, rather than for maximum load capacity.

I completely agree; this is a key point. IKEA furniture is primarily designed for easy assembly and moderate load. However, there are alternatives available from specialized suppliers that can be used to improve the load-bearing capacity. Still, the entire construction should be considered—not just individual screw types. Attention should also be paid to the correct wall anchors, the material of the panels, and the installation method. Simply replacing screws without questioning the overall design can end up being costly.

For maximum load capacity, I always use stainless steel screws with coarse threads, at least 4 mm (0.16 inches) in diameter. I use matching wall plugs. These usually provide the best hold with Besta.

That sums it up perfectly. The load-bearing capacity also depends on the material – I’ve seen shelves fail not at the screws, but in the particle board itself. These situations can turn into all-evening jobs when professionals have to step in.

One more tip: If you want to maximize load capacity, you might also consider using metal connector plates, which significantly increase the strength of wooden joints. The combination is often more effective than just using thicker screws.

In conclusion: Screws are important, but if you want to properly support Besta, think about reinforcement in the right places – metal brackets, cross braces, and suitable screws together ensure stability. That’s how you make your furniture smile! 😄
