Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an Ikea Besta shelving unit and want to focus particularly on its stability. My question is: based on your experience and expertise, which screw connections and fasteners in the Ikea Besta system are especially strong and suitable for ensuring high load capacity and durability? I am not only referring to the standard connections but also any possible reinforcements or alternative screws that can be used to make the construction more stable. Are there specific types of connections within the Besta system that have proven to be particularly reliable? Thanks in advance for your well-informed advice!
Hello Emma66, your question is very well formulated and important for everyone using the BESTA system. Essentially, the supplied connecting dowels and cam locks form the basis. They ensure right angles and quick assembly but are not designed for heavy loads. If you want to carry heavier loads, I recommend the following additions: - Metal brackets at the corners help to better transfer lateral forces. - Screwing into the back panel increases the cabinet’s rigidity. - Additional screws in the shelves prevent sagging. It is best to use high-quality chipboard screws with the appropriate torque, as these hold better than simple connector fasteners. Overall, no single screwed connection is “especially load-bearing”; it is the combination and correct distribution that makes the difference. Hope this helps!
It is worthwhile to consider the difference between compression and tensile stress in screw connections. Cam lock fittings usually consist of particleboard dowels combined with a screw; these work well for standard loads but reach their limits under higher tensile forces. It is advisable to additionally ensure stability using metal brackets or reinforcement plates. Furthermore, in key areas, using captive nuts together with machine screws can be effective when you want to fasten both the back panels and side panels from both sides. This significantly increases the overall load-bearing capacity.

Especially with DIY furniture like BESTA, it often helps to not only insert the back panel but also screw it in place at several points. This creates a stable frame structure. Additionally, metal brackets / L-brackets fixed in the corners are useful. In general, I would avoid using ordinary wood screws and instead recommend screws with a fine thread, specifically designed for particleboard.
