I would like to start a focused discussion on the availability of replacement parts for IKEA Billy shelves. I am especially interested in which replacement parts for Billy are often difficult to obtain when buying them individually, and whether this depends on the specific model variant. For example, are there recurring shortages or special parts for the uprights, side panels, or back panels that are only available through third-party sellers? I would appreciate any experiences and tips on which parts are easy to source and for which ones it might be necessary to rely on reproductions or replacement parts from other sources.

which spare parts for Billy are actually often hard to getThe back panels are the most difficult to obtain individually directly from IKEA. Uprights and side panels are usually available.I see this a bit more nuanced. Just because IKEA mostly offers standard parts, it doesn’t mean that all parts are equally easy to obtain.
This is often true, but it also depends on the model’s age. Older versions of the Billy shelves sometimes have special back panels that are no longer manufactured or officially distributed. This inevitably leads to shortages. I would also say that shelf supports and small hardware like dowels or connector screws are often underestimated.
It would be interesting to have a more detailed breakdown of which spare parts are officially offered and which inevitably need to be sourced from third-party suppliers or second-hand markets.

I once looked for replacement caps for the feet myself, and they are hardly ever sold separately. And if they are, usually at a very inflated price. So my tip: keep all parts whenever possible to avoid relying on third-party sellers later. 🙂
Also interesting: the dimensions of the back panel might help with reproductions. If anyone has this data, please share!
