Hello everyone,

I would like to know which replacement parts for Billy shelves can be easily swapped out by yourself without special tools or professional skills. I’m mainly interested in whether it’s safe to replace damaged shelves or side panels without making the whole unit unstable. I’m also curious about screws, anchors (wall plugs), or castors – which of these are suitable for self-assembly and disassembly?

Maybe someone has practical experience or can offer advice on what to watch out for to ensure the shelving remains safe and stable to use afterward. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

When talking about BILLY shelves, it is mainly the shelves themselves that can be replaced relatively easily. The replacement is straightforward as long as you use the correct spare parts that match the exact shelf model.

Screws and wall plugs usually do not need to be replaced if they are still intact, as these are often specifically designed for the cabinet and contribute to its stability. However, any damaged screws should of course be replaced.

The casters can also be changed quite easily if the shelf is equipped with them – usually, a simple screwdriver is sufficient. The important thing is to carefully reassemble all parts exactly as they were before to ensure stability.

I have a more nuanced view. If screws or dowels have been compromised by moisture or stress, it’s not enough to assume they can simply be left in place. In some cases, this could significantly affect stability, especially since with BILLY the frame and load distribution heavily depend on the fasteners.

Regarding the shelves: these can indeed be replaced by yourself, but you should carefully check whether the new shelves fit precisely into the guide rails, otherwise there is a risk of slipping or damage to the shelving unit.

Ultimately, it is advisable not only to aim for easy installation but also to critically evaluate which parts will actually hold properly during reassembly.

Good morning everyone,

to answer Manpeo’s question in detail: Replacing the shelves in BILLY units is actually quite straightforward if you use the original replacement parts or exact replicas. The typical replacement process goes as follows:

1. Empty the shelf – make sure to remove everything from the unit before starting to work safely.
2. Remove the old shelves – depending on the model, this can mean simply lifting them out or releasing a clip mechanism.
3. Insert the new shelves – be careful that the shelf edges are not damaged or deformed.

When replacing screws and wall plugs (anchors), it is best to use the original kits because the stability and material are designed for the specific loads of the unit. Spare parts from other manufacturers may affect load capacity and can lead to breakage later on.

The casters can also be replaced on some variants without much effort. The trick here is to carefully remove the old wheels without damaging the mounting holes or frame.

One thing I keep pointing out: if the shelf unit is older, wooden joints may become porous, and simply replacing individual parts might no longer be very effective – in that case, a complete renewal should be considered.

Manpeo, could you please specify which exact model you are referring to and whether it is an older or newer unit?

Thanks for asking! It is a BILLY shelving unit measuring 80x28x202 cm (31.5x11x79.5 inches) that I bought at IKEA about 5 years ago. Some of the shelves have swollen slightly due to moisture, and a few screws appear to be somewhat rusted. I would like to replace exactly those parts and restore the unit to its original condition to prevent it from becoming unstable.

The casters are not installed, so this mainly concerns the shelves, screws, and possibly the wall plugs.

If anyone has personal experience with this combination or recommendations, that would be great!

You can easily replace the shelves in BILLY yourself. Order original replacement shelves, remove the old ones, and insert the new ones.

Replace screws if they are rusty or damaged—preferably with screws of the same size and material.

Dowels often fit tightly; only replace them if they are loose. Your shelving unit doesn’t use rollers, otherwise, those would be easy to replace as well.

Tools: screwdriver, possibly an Allen key, nothing special.
