Hello everyone,
I have several BILLY shelves in use that have developed minor damage or wear on the edges and joints over time. Therefore, I am wondering which repair kits or replacement parts you would recommend for BILLY shelves to effectively and permanently fix these issues.
I am especially interested in kits that work well on both plastic and wood surfaces and provide a discreet finish. It would also be helpful if they are easy to apply and ideally come with instructions.
Do you have any tips for specific brands or suppliers? Perhaps also advice on any additional tools needed?
Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

For BILLY shelves, I recommend the IKEA replacement kit, which you can get at IKEA customer service in-store or online. It includes screws, wall plugs, and plastic caps. For small scratches, you can use repair wax in a matching wood color. You only need a small putty knife for that.
Hello,
There are generally three categories for repairing BILLY shelves: original IKEA spare parts, wood repair kits, and plastic repair kits.
1. IKEA spare parts sets usually include screws, brackets, and dowels that help with stabilization. Advantage: precise fit and affordable.
2. Repair wax or wood filler is ideal for scratches or small holes in wooden edges. Important: choose matching colors carefully to minimize visible differences.
3. For plastic components, there are special repair kits that can fill small cracks or broken clips. These usually consist of two-component materials and require a bit more skill to apply.
Tip: Before use, clean the surfaces thoroughly and lightly sand the repaired area if needed to keep the finish even.
Tools: A small spatula, fine sandpaper (grit 220-320), and possibly a screwdriver for spare parts.
Personally, I think IKEA spare parts are essential for function, but repair wax works best for appearance.
If you have further questions about the process, feel free to ask.

For BILLY shelves, I recommend the IKEA replacement part set directlyThat is certainly the most obvious option, but I wonder: How good are these IKEA sets really when it comes to durability and cosmetic repairs? Often, these sets are more functional than aesthetic.

Personally, I think IKEA replacement parts are very important for functionality, but for appearance, repair wax usually works best. That sounds reasonable. However, the quality of repair waxes varies significantly. Where can you find waxes with enough color options and good durability?
My experience also shows that with older BILLY shelves, color differences occur due to different production batches, making it difficult to find a matching product.
Additionally, it would be interesting to know if there are recommended brand experiences that are better than hardware store products.
Does anyone have comparative data between IKEA replacement parts, specialized wood wax brands (e.g., Mohawk or Börner), and more affordable options?
Also, I’m curious whether adjustable feet or plastic clips are often a problem for you as well, and how you repair or replace them?
I look forward to an in-depth exchange of experiences.
