Hello,

I hope I’ve posted this in the right subforum. I’m a complete beginner, so please feel free to give me a little guidance if I’m doing something wrong!

A bit about me: I’m Robert, a father of three children. We have purchased an old house. It is being renovated and a large extension is being added.

Our children have put a lot of thought into planning their rooms and naturally want all their ideas to be realized, which won’t be possible. I would now like to get a software program that allows us to virtually furnish the rooms they have planned. Can you give me any recommendations?

Thanks
Rob

I am also interested if there is anything available here.

Use Sweet Home 3D – import the floor plan as a background image, trace the walls, adjust the corresponding furniture from the inventory to the correct dimensions, or directly import the right furniture piece from the internet. This saved us from a big mistake with built-in furniture because it looks quite different in the 3D view than it does on paper.

Great, thanks @Nummer12! Where or how can you import furniture for there from the internet?

Basically, the available standard furniture already gets you quite far – all dimensions can be adjusted. This allows for a good estimation of proportions and spatial effects. If you want a nicer look, you can import (more modern) furniture, for example from 3dwarehouse (just search for it). Be careful to use the Collada format instead of the SketchUp file. Do not download directly from the overview page; instead, go to the detailed view, then download, and choose Collada.

SketchUp is another alternative program, but I have never worked with it.

Sweet Home 3D is very good and, above all, free of charge. For lighting effects and creating lighting plans, there is the free program Dialux Evo. A free interior design consultation by a professional planner, including a furnishing concept, is available with the purchase of a 39€ (approximately $40) shopping voucher at Ikea.
