blamoI am planning to use some furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series for my young children’s room and would like to know: Which IKEA Brimnes furniture pieces are suitable for small children? I am especially interested in aspects such as safety, ergonomics, and practical everyday use. Are there models that are particularly well-suited for kids, for example, because they are low, have no sharp edges, or are made from safe materials? Any tips on storage solutions that children can easily use themselves would also be helpful. Thanks for your opinions and experiences!
In general, furniture for young children should prioritize safety, stability, and age-appropriate design. Within the IKEA Brimnes series, the following pieces are particularly recommended for young children:
- The Brimnes daybed with storage: It has a low height, allowing easy access for getting in and out, and the drawers under the bed provide ample space for toys or clothing.
- Wardrobes with doors (e.g., the Brimnes 2-door model) are sturdy and feature rounded edges; however, the hinges should be checked to ensure they include finger protection.
- Dressers from the Brimnes series often have a soft-close function, which reduces the risk of pinching injuries.
It is important to securely anchor all furniture to the wall to minimize the risk of accidents.

One more thing to consider with Brimnes furniture: the surfaces are made of MDF with a melamine coating, which is easy to maintain, but the edges can feel a bit harder, especially for small children who tend to tap on or climb the furniture.
I can only emphasize this, especially with wardrobes and dressers. Although IKEA’s tip-over tests are passed, wall anchoring should always be used when small children are around. Also: check the height of the furniture in relation to the maximum pull force, and consider choosing lower models when possible.
One more technical tip: for beds with storage, I recommend installing the drawers so they can be locked independently from each other to prevent children from opening them all at once and getting trapped underneath.

I think the Brimnes daybed is great for children! It offers plenty of storage space along with a comfortable sleeping area that isn’t too high.
I also like that it has a simple design, which can be made very child-friendly with colorful fabrics.
I fully support installing wall anchors—this way, nothing should ever go wrong! It’s simply perfect for small kids’ rooms, in my opinion! 😊

The Brimnes daybed, as mentioned, is ideal because it is 85 cm (33 inches) high and allows safe access in and out. The drawers underneath are designed with safety in mind, featuring recessed handles instead of protruding ones, which reduces the risk of injury.
Wardrobes from this series are generally less suitable as the first wardrobe for toddlers, as the doors can sometimes be quite heavy to open and the handles are placed high – this combination can pose a safety risk. If a wardrobe is desired, it should be operable at a low level or combined with lower dressers.
I agree with this, especially because of the easy access to the bed and the additional space.
