Jefar35Hello everyone,
I am planning to repaint my IKEA Besta shelving system to make the surface more durable and resistant to scratches, moisture, and everyday wear. Therefore, my specific question is: Which types of paint or specific products have proven to be particularly durable and long-lasting on the surfaces of IKEA Besta furniture? I am especially interested in a combination of good adhesion to the relatively smooth, melamine-coated panels, high scratch resistance, and resistance to moisture or stains. Additionally, I would like to know if you have experience with any specific surface pretreatments to improve the longevity of the paint finish.
I am looking forward to your practical tips and recommendations that go beyond the usual painting advice.

Hey Jefar35,
I painted my Besta with a special water-based furniture paint. It has excellent adhesion, dries quickly, and is quite resistant to scratches. Plus: no unpleasant odor during application. Oh, and it’s also better for the environment if you pay attention. Maybe this could be something for you! 🌿👌
If you want to do the undercoat, use a primer specifically designed for smooth surfaces. This way, the finish will stay great for a long time.

To ensure the durability of the paint finish on IKEA Besta, I recommend the following points:
- Use two-component coatings (2K) or polyurethane paints, as these are chemically much more resistant than standard acrylic paints.
- The surface must be thoroughly degreased and lightly sanded (grit 240–320) to ensure good adhesion.
- Pretreat with a primer specifically designed for melamine and plastic surfaces.
Combining these steps results in a particularly robust and durable finish that can withstand even high mechanical stress.

Hello Jefar35,
I would like to add some information, as the topic of surface treatment for IKEA Besta is often underestimated. The shelves are typically made of melamine-coated particleboard, which has a very smooth and dense surface. This makes painting quite challenging.
First of all, it is important to:
- Clean with an alkaline cleaner or isopropanol to remove all grease and contaminants.
- Sand with very fine sandpaper (at least grit 280) to dull the gloss – this step is often skipped but significantly reduces adhesion.
Regarding the paints:
- Two-component polyurethane (2K PU) coatings are definitely the best choice for a durable finish.
- For a DIY solution with less effort, I recommend high-quality water-based furniture or parquet varnishes, which are often quite resistant, but don’t match the performance of 2K coatings.
Additionally, before painting, a special adhesion primer for plastic surfaces (e.g. for ABS or melamine) can be applied to improve the paint’s bonding on the surface.
If stain resistance is important to you, make sure to fully cure the paint after drying – this can sometimes take several days and requires a consistent room temperature.
I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any questions about the exact procedure.

To ensure the durability of the paint on IKEA Besta, I recommend paying attention to the following points:I would like to add to that, especially regarding surface preparation and paint selection:
- I specifically recommend using 2K polyurethane paints, as they provide high chemical and mechanical resistance.
- Adhesion on melamine-coated surfaces is challenging; therefore, a primer specially designed for this purpose is essential.
- Sanding with fine sandpaper (at least grit 240) is mandatory to mechanically support adhesion.
- A complete drying time and possible curing time are necessary to achieve optimal scratch and impact resistance.
Additionally, in professional applications, applying a clear 2K topcoat can further enhance protection.
The combination of primer, proper paint, and careful preparation results in a very durable finish on Besta.
