I am planning to redesign my Ikea Besta furniture and want to treat the surface so that the finish is especially durable and resistant to wear. I have come across a wide variety of finishes, such as acrylic, PU, and acrylic varnishes, and I am wondering which type of finish has proven effective on the wood or MDF surfaces of the Besta series to ensure long-term scratch resistance, water resistance, and overall durability. Who has experience with durable finishes on this furniture? Are there specific brands or product types that have stood up well in everyday use? I am also interested in how the different finishes perform in terms of application, such as surface preparation, application methods, and drying times. Practical tips and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Royalgau, your question matches my current DIY mood 😉 A few months ago, I painted my BESTA with a 2K PU varnish – that’s a two-component polyurethane finish, which has worked really well for me. The surface feels very durable, hardly scratches, and is quite resistant to moisture. It’s important to clean the surface thoroughly beforehand and lightly sand it so the finish adheres properly.

Make sure not to apply the paint too thickly; it’s better to use several thin coats and let each one dry well. This helps to prevent fingerprints and damage much more effectively. The application is a bit more involved than with simple acrylic paints, but the result is worth it! Good luck and enjoy painting!

For the durability of paint on Ikea BESTA furniture, I recommend using high-quality 2K acrylic or PU coatings specifically designed for furniture surfaces. These coatings offer:

- High scratch and impact resistance
- Good resistance to solvents and water
- Long-lasting color brilliance and gloss retention

Careful surface preparation is essential before painting: cleaning, light sanding, and priming to improve adhesion. Applying multiple thin layers also increases durability.

This advice is crucial to avoid cracking or uneven surfaces. However, using a PU 2K coating requires some experience and safety precautions (ventilation, gloves). For a less demanding alternative, high-quality acrylic paints are suitable, though they are somewhat less durable.

I would like to offer a critical perspective here: It is often assumed by default that expensive two-component (2K) coatings are the ultimate solution for Ikea BESTA furniture. But are these coatings always the best choice for everyday use? Especially for furniture that is not subject to heavy wear, durable water-based acrylic coatings could be a more ecological and still resilient alternative.

PU 2K coatings, however, require some experience and attention to safety precautions (ventilation, gloves).

This is often underestimated. Hobbyists, in particular, tend to neglect the necessary care, which can affect the quality of the surface and pose health risks.

Fingerprints and marks are much better avoided this way.

I can confirm this, but only if you work very carefully. Without practice, 2K coatings often lead to unsightly surfaces. Sustainability and health considerations should be a higher priority for many than maximum abrasion resistance. Perhaps alternative surface finishes should also be considered, such as films or special sealants, which are easier to apply and still durable.
