Good morning everyone,
I am planning to personalize my Ikea Besta furniture by painting or applying colors. My question to the community is: Which paints and coatings work well on Ikea Besta furniture? Specifically, I am interested in:
- Which types of paint (e.g., acrylic paints, paint pens, spray cans) are best suited for the surface to achieve a durable and visually appealing finish?
- What should I consider beforehand, for example regarding the surface material (plastic, laminate?), to ensure good adhesion of the paint?
- Are there color tones that particularly complement the most common Besta colors (white, black-brown, oak)?
- What surface finishes are possible (matte, glossy, satin) and how do they affect the appearance and maintenance?
I want to make this as durable and low-maintenance as possible. Maybe someone already has experience or tips on preparation, the painting process itself, and the choice of paint and coatings.
Thanks in advance for your insights!

My BESTA furniture all has a glossy white foil front – so it's not a painted wood surface. Therefore, I assume the surface is relatively smooth and silicone-hard, right? That’s correct; glossy foil fronts are extremely smooth and can contain silicone residues that significantly reduce paint adhesion.
To ensure long-term adhesion, follow this sequence:
- Clean with a silicone-free cleaner
- Sand lightly with fine sandpaper
- Apply an adhesion primer specially formulated for plastics
Using spray cans is possible for an even application, but you should definitely perform some tests on inconspicuous areas first.
Applying a clear coat for sealing is almost always advisable, as it protects the surface and makes cleaning easier.
Regarding color choice, for white fronts I would recommend cool to neutral tones like blue, light gray, or cream to maintain a modern look.

- After sanding, be sure to remove all dust, for example with a damp cloth and isopropanol, to eliminate any contamination.
- Allow the primer to dry for at least 24 hours, as this greatly affects adhesion later on.
- When applying the paint, work in a dust-free environment, ideally at moderate temperatures and low humidity.
Regarding colors:
- For white surfaces, gray and pastel shades, as well as warm beige and earth tones, create a natural look.
- For dark brown fronts, a matte anthracite or dark green shade can look very elegant.
Clear sealing is almost a must for smooth foil surfaces; otherwise, the paint will wear off quickly.
One more question for logasu: Will the piece of furniture be subject to heavy use, for example as a TV stand, or is it mostly decorative? This will influence the product choice.
