Hello everyone,
I am considering painting my Ikea Besta furniture to give it a more personalized and durable finish. My main question is: which types of paint adhere best to the typical melamine surfaces of the Besta units and provide long-lasting resistance to scratches, wear, and moisture?
I want to avoid the paint peeling off after a short time or showing unpleasant signs of use. I am especially interested in whether there are specific pretreatments or primers that improve adhesion, and which type of paint (acrylic, polyurethane, two-component, etc.) offers the best combination of durability and appearance.
I would appreciate concrete product recommendations, personal experiences with different paints, and tips for application. Thanks!

In summary, from a technical perspective, a multi-step process is ideal for painting Ikea Besta cabinets with melamine surfaces:
- Cleaning and light sanding (grit 220-320)
- Application of a melamine adhesion promoter or plastic primer
- Multiple coats of a hard two-component polyurethane lacquer (2K-PU), which provides optimal mechanical properties
Additional notes:
- Two-component coatings offer significantly higher abrasion resistance compared to acrylic paints, which, although easier to apply, tend to show wear more quickly based on experience
- Drying and curing times require patience, at least 24-48 hours per coat, to ensure maximum durability
- There are special water-based 2K coatings that contain fewer solvents and are therefore better suited for indoor use
This approach is industry standard for achieving a long-lasting, durable finish on challenging surfaces like melamine.

The goal is a combination of visual enhancement and, above all, durability – providing a protective layer against scratches and easy cleaning of light dirt. I completely understand your concern! I treated my own BESTA doors with spray paint, and after two years the surface is still in good condition, but there have been a few scratches. This was with a basic acrylic paint.
Perhaps two-component (2K) paints are a better choice, but I was initially put off by the application process. I am also considering consulting a professional – sometimes the result is worth the investment. Maybe these thoughts will help you.
The long-term durability of coatings on Ikea BESTA furniture with melamine resin surfaces depends on several factors:
- Mechanical Preparation: Sanding must not penetrate the melamine coating. This means carefully sanding with very fine grits.
- Cleaning: All residues, especially grease and dust, must be removed as they reduce adhesion.
- Primer: Special adhesion promoters, often epoxy- or plastic-based, can significantly improve paint adhesion.
- Coating System:
- 2K polyurethane paints: Excellent durability, high gloss possible, good resistance to moisture and scratches.
- Water-based acrylic paints: More environmentally friendly, easier to apply, but less resistant to wear.
The process:
1. Sand with P280-P320 grit, only roughen the surface, do not sand through
2. Clean with isopropanol or a degreasing cleaner
3. Apply a special adhesion primer (e.g., an epoxy primer)
4. After sufficient drying time, apply a thin layer of 2K polyurethane paint
5. Sand between coats with fine sanding pad (e.g., Scotch-Brite)
6. Apply 2–3 layers of clear coat, ideally satin finish for scratch resistance
If the process is too complex, synthetic resin paints are an option, but their lifespan is significantly shorter.
Do you already have a specific type of paint or manufacturer in mind that we can discuss in more detail?
