Hello everyone, I am considering repainting my IKEA BESTÅ fronts to give the furniture a more modern and refined look. My specific question is: Which paint colors work best on the smooth MDF fronts of the BESTÅ series to not only look visually high-quality but also be particularly durable and resistant to wear? I am interested in recommendations for color tones that remain beautiful over time, as well as advice on paint types that provide the best adhesion and protection when applied carefully. I would also appreciate experiences with metallic or matte finishes. Thanks in advance!

I would like to get a bit more technical here: As Kinbu correctly mentioned, the BESTÅ fronts are usually coated with melamine or painted, which makes it difficult to achieve a strong bond between the existing surface and new paint. Generally, I recommend the following procedure for the best durability:

- Clean and degrease the surface
- Lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper (grit 220-320) to improve adhesion
- Apply a high-quality solvent-based primer designed specifically for plastics/MDF
- Use intermediate and final coats of polyurethane (PU) or two-component acrylic paint, selected according to the color chosen

Regarding colors: White, anthracite, deep blue, or berry tones provide a good balance of visual freshness and durability. Metallic paints are more challenging, as they require special application equipment and beginners often end up with uneven surfaces. Matte paint has the advantage of showing scratches less but is more sensitive to stains than high-gloss finishes. Therefore, I recommend applying a matte or satin clear coat after painting as well.

I would be interested to know, Anicaren: Are you looking to change the fronts purely for aesthetic reasons, or will these be work surfaces subject to heavier use?

A supplementary note on color selection: Many people overlook that colors with a high white content often darken or develop a slight yellowish tint indoors if they are not made with high-quality pigments. Therefore, for light colors, I recommend choosing reputable manufacturers that provide UV-resistant pigments. For dark colors, the thickness of the paint layer is crucial for durability, especially with anthracite or black. Careful monitoring of the paint application ensures an even and long-lasting protective layer. I always base the choice between matte or gloss finish on the overall room design. Finally, clear care instructions are important, as frequent wet cleaning can wear down the paint.

Exactly! I always wonder why some people want a smooth metallic shine, forgetting that it’s truly demanding craftsmanship. I’d rather have a professional-quality matte dark gray than a poorly sprayed silver that starts peeling the next day. The best paints won’t help without proper preparation and experience, whether it’s color or finish.
