Hello everyone, I am considering repainting my IKEA BESTÅ fronts to give the furniture a more modern and refined look. My specific question is: Which paint colors work best on the smooth MDF fronts of the BESTÅ series to not only look visually high-quality but also be particularly durable and resistant to wear? I am interested in recommendations for color tones that remain beautiful over time, as well as advice on paint types that provide the best adhesion and protection when applied carefully. I would also appreciate experiences with metallic or matte finishes. Thanks in advance!

For BESTÅ fronts, I recommend acrylic or PU paints. Gray and anthracite tones are very durable and resistant to dirt. Matte finishes look modern, while glossy ones tend to be more delicate.

Honestly, who really expects lasting top quality from IKEA? There's often a lot of hype, but the paint finishes usually only last as long as you’re not paying close attention. In my opinion, if you want something durable, you should focus less on the color and more on the type of paint. PU (polyurethane) coatings are sturdy, but whether they are matte or glossy is mostly a matter of personal preference and doesn’t affect durability much. What’s far more important is thorough surface preparation and a good primer! This way, even a “less popular” color lasts longer than any trendy shade.

Hello Anicaren, I’m happy to provide you with a detailed assessment: The BESTÅ fronts are usually made of MDF with a melamine coating. This means the paint needs to adhere well, which is hardly possible without sanding and priming. Regarding color choice – light shades like white and cream appear timeless and mask minor signs of wear better, while dark colors such as anthracite or navy blue give a sophisticated, elegant look. I recommend using a matte polyurethane (PU) paint, as it is more resistant to scratches and fingerprints than pure acrylic paints. Before painting, make sure to prepare the surface with an adhesion primer and fine sandpaper. An additional clear coat will make the surface even more durable, especially for kitchen furniture.

I always think it’s great when cabinets are not only beautiful but also show a bit of personality! Anicaren, if you’re open to some color: teal or a dark pine green look really stylish on a BESTÅ front and are still not too bright. To ensure the paint lasts well, I always use satin-finish PU (polyurethane) paints. They feel great to the touch and do a wonderful job of hiding small scratches. And honestly, these colors are also easy to maintain. Maybe adding a fresh color will bring some fun to your home!

In summary: matte lacquer on a well-sanded surface with primer plus clear coat. Preferably in neutral colors that show little dirt in everyday use. Black tones often require more maintenance.
