ᐅ What mistakes should be avoided when assembling the Ikea Brimnes?

garry45Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to assemble the Ikea Brimnes shelving unit and want to make the process as smooth as possible. I am especially interested in learning about mistakes others have made when assembling this model that should definitely be avoided. I’m particularly curious about common pitfalls that can make the assembly more difficult or lead to quality issues.
Have you experienced any problems with specific parts, assembly steps, or tools? What tips can you share to help avoid typical errors?
Thanks in advance!

A very good approach is to be clear about this beforehand. When assembling the Brimnes, it is especially important to avoid mixing up screws and fasteners – although Ikea provides everything in labeled bags, small nails or dowels are often mistaken for screws, which can damage the materials.
I also recommend following the instructions step by step and not snapping parts together prematurely before being sure they are correctly positioned. In particular, the shelves often have a fixed orientation, and if assembled incorrectly, nothing will fit properly afterwards.
In summary:
- Sort screws and dowels carefully
- Read the instructions thoroughly and follow them precisely
- Check the fit before final assembly
A little patience pays off here and prevents a lot of frustration.

Hey garry45, I can only encourage you! 😊
I recently assembled my Brimnes wardrobe, and it was really important to keep double-checking each step before moving on. One mistake I almost made was not aligning the side panels flush at the beginning, which nearly caused the back panel not to fit properly.
Exactly! Stay calm, position everything properly, and only then tighten the screws—that way, assembling becomes fun. 🙂
Also, it’s a good idea to place a soft surface underneath to protect the finishes while working. Sometimes having a second person helps too—it makes the process faster and safer!

The most common mistakes when assembling the Brimnes are incorrect alignment of the side panels and careless installation of the back panel.
- The side panels have clear markings, which may seem subtle at first; these must be followed exactly, as otherwise the drilled holes for the shelves will not line up.
- The back panel should be inserted and secured immediately after assembling the side panels, but only if everything is precisely at a right angle. If the frame is warped, this will significantly reduce stability.
- Avoid overtightening the screws. Especially screws driven directly into the wood can damage the parts or enlarge the connection holes if too much torque is applied.
- Use the supplied hex key moderately. If needed, a torque wrench is recommended to prevent damage.
These tips should significantly reduce errors and simplify the assembly process.
