Hello everyone,
I’m currently working on assembling my Billy shelf on my own. I’ve noticed that it’s not always straightforward, and I suspect that many common mistakes can happen during this process. My question to the community is: What errors frequently occur when assembling a Billy shelf by yourself? Which stumbling blocks are especially tricky and easy to overlook for DIYers or beginners?
I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences about mistakes you’ve made or heard of, so that I and others here might avoid them.

I completely understand you—I’ve been in the same situation with assembling the Billy shelf and felt quite overwhelmed at first. A common mistake I’ve often seen and made myself is not aligning the drill holes or dowels properly. This especially happens when attaching the back panel, as the small nails or screws can easily be misaligned, which affects overall stability.
Another thing people often underestimate is the importance of sorting all parts carefully before starting assembly. I was eager to get going right away and only realized later that I had installed a part upside down—which meant I had to take quite a bit apart again. Staying calm and thoroughly checking each piece before fixing it in place can save a lot of frustration.
Sometimes having a second pair of hands helps, especially when connecting the large side panels. If you’re working alone, take your time and consider taking short breaks. 🙂

Hello Kelvin,
to respond to your very good and specific question, I would like to summarize and explain some common mistakes when assembling Billy shelves on your own:
First: The back panel is often considered less important, but it is actually essential for the stability of the shelf. A common mistake is that the back panel is either warped or not installed straight. This causes the shelf to be unstable and later “wobbles.”
Second: The correct dowels and screws are crucial; they are often mixed up or screwed in the wrong way. Especially with pre-drilled holes in the wood, it is important to follow the instructions carefully.
Third: The shelves are sometimes installed on the wrong side – here you need to check that the holes correspond to the desired shelf height and that the side with the support points faces down so that the shelves are securely positioned.
Fourth: Organizing the parts carefully before starting assembly provides great clarity and prevents mistakes.
I recommend, if you are unsure, to study the IKEA instructions carefully and, if needed, watch the assembly videos on the IKEA website.
I can only confirm that. Most problems arise from carelessness at this point.
That also describes a classic problem that is easily overlooked.
I hope this helps you!
