Xiao51Hello everyone,
I recently tried assembling the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and noticed some common pitfalls that I would like to understand better in order to avoid them next time.
My question to the community is: What are the most frequent mistakes when assembling the Ikea Brimnes?
I am especially interested in issues that repeatedly cause problems, such as using the wrong screws, the order of assembly, possible mix-ups of parts, or difficulties with alignment.
Who has had similar experiences or can offer specific advice on what to pay close attention to? Tips on tool selection or how to make the assembly process more efficient are also very welcome.
Thank you in advance!

In general, when assembling the Ikea Brimnes, I often encounter the following mistakes:
- Not thoroughly sorting the screws and wooden parts before starting.
- Confusing the side panels, which makes correct drilling and alignment difficult.
- Inserting the metal rails without proper alignment, which later affects the sliding doors.
- Not tightening the floor screws exactly at a right angle, reducing stability.
Another issue is neglecting the supplied dowels when installing the back panel. Often, these thin strips are simply stapled, even though the screws should provide the necessary stability here.
In terms of tools, a cordless drill with adjustable torque is helpful to avoid over-tightening the screws.

This question is very important because the Brimnes wardrobe is sturdy, but does not tolerate mistakes.
A common error occurs during the installation of the sliding doors: the tracks must be mounted precisely parallel. This is essential so that the doors slide smoothly and do not stick.
It is also frequently observed that the back panel is installed incorrectly. This not only provides stabilization but also ensures right-angled edges. If this is done inaccurately, the overall stability is significantly affected.
When it comes to the screws, care should be taken not to tighten them too much—especially with the wooden dowels, as overtightening can cause the wood to split.
I also recommend having a helper for aligning and holding the parts, especially if you feel unsure when working alone.

Not consistently sorting the screws and wooden parts before starting. I agree, but that would be an oversimplification.
It’s also worth critically examining the weaknesses of the instructions: although the components are numbered, some parts look very similar. So if you start without careful comparison, the chance of mistakes is quite high.

The rails must be mounted exactly parallel. Exactly. The tolerances for drilling are tight. Even a slight misalignment can cause jamming or crooked doors.
Another mistake I see is that many users do not properly tighten the supplied furniture connectors, which over time weakens the stability.
My suggestion: Prepare in advance by making your own small markings on the parts, and additionally use a spirit level and square to avoid problems.
To complement this, here is a brief assembly guide that helps avoid common mistakes with Brimnes:
- Lay out all components and screws, and check them against the instructions (sort different screws!)
- Follow the instructions step by step, without skipping any
- Carefully inspect the side panels for markings and drill holes before assembly
- Align the rails precisely; a spirit level is very helpful here
- Insert screws slowly and carefully, positioning the dowels correctly
- Fix the back panel with a thin strip using enough nails, then secure it fully with screws
A common mistake is tightening the screws too early, before all parts are properly aligned. This causes stress and makes later adjustments difficult.
Following these basic rules will significantly reduce difficulties during the Brimnes assembly.
