Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install my kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and would like to add a custom backsplash. I am wondering which materials are best suited for a DIY kitchen backsplash that is durable, easy to maintain, and heat-resistant, without the effort or cost becoming excessive. It is also important to me that the backsplash is easy to install and not too heavy, as I will be mounting it myself.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on whether certain plastic panels, HPL (high-pressure laminate), tiles, glass, wood-based panels, or other materials are better? Are there practical combinations or special installation methods that work particularly well with the Metod system?

I would really appreciate any tips or advice!

Installation with construction adhesive was straightforward and holds extremely well!

This matches my experience as well. Here are a few tips if you decide to use construction adhesive:

- Make sure the adhesive is compatible with the material, especially with aluminum composite panels.
- Allow plenty of time for curing before use (at least 24 hours) and protect from moisture.
- Clean and degrease the wall surface thoroughly for maximum adhesion.

Moisture can easily be underestimated in kitchen areas, so proper preparation is essential.

Really great result for the price! Obviously not as heat-resistant as glass or HPL, but perfectly adequate for normal kitchen areas.

This is a practical point often overlooked: the backsplash is not exposed to extreme heat directly near the stove, so more affordable options often suffice.

Just as an addition: For areas directly behind cooktops, the material should be continuously heat resistant to at least 100°C (212°F).

From the many responses, I gather that HPL panels are probably the best combination of flexibility, durability, and DIY suitability. Also, installation using adhesive without additional substructure makes sense if the wall is even.

Glass remains visually appealing but is likely more suitable for professionals or special kitchen designs in terms of craftsmanship and cost.

One last question to everyone: Does anyone have experience with special care requirements for HPL kitchen backsplashes? Are there cleaning products or methods that should be avoided to prevent damaging the surface?

Good question!

HPL backsplashes are generally very low-maintenance. Use mild dish soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid harsh scouring agents, highly alkaline cleaners, or abrasive cleaning pads, as they can dull or damage the surface over time.

Also, avoid using very hot steam cleaners on the surface. It’s best to clean grease splatters immediately to prevent them from baking in.

This will keep the backsplash looking good and functional for a long time.
