Hello everyone, I am planning to add lighting to my IKEA Platsa shelves to make them both more inviting and functional. My question is: What lighting options work well with IKEA Platsa shelves, are easy to integrate, visually appealing, and, most importantly, practical for everyday use? I am interested in LED solutions that are simple to install, as well as smart lighting or traditional light strips. It is important that the lighting not only highlights accents but also provides enough brightness to clearly illuminate books or decorations. Does anyone have recommendations or experience with specific systems, mounting options, or tips on power supply? Thanks in advance!

For Platsa shelves, I recommend LED strips with a plug-in power supply. These are easy to install and provide sufficient lighting. Alternatively, individual recessed spotlights can be used if you prefer focused lighting. Make sure not to use battery-powered solutions if continuous lighting is required.

I’m happy to provide a more detailed overview of lighting options for Platsa shelves, as I have tried several different variants myself. Basically, there are three common methods:

- LED light strips: These are flexible, usually self-adhesive, and can easily be adjusted in length. Advantage: continuous lighting with minimal effort. Disadvantage: cable management is crucial; otherwise, it looks untidy.

- Recessed spotlights or small downlights: Very suitable for highlighting individual compartments or display cases. They are usually mounted with screws and require precise drilling.

- Smart LED modules: If you like to control your lighting via app or voice commands, there are now smart strips (e.g., Zigbee or Wi-Fi LEDs) that typically have low heat output and are flexible.

One more tip regarding the connection: IKEA itself offers the TRÅDFRI smart system, which works quite well with Platsa. Just make sure the power supplies are mounted outside the shelving unit and cables are neatly hidden. Avoid high-power LEDs as they can generate too much heat. Safety comes first. Hope this helps!

I agree with that. It is important to choose the right light color, such as warm white (~2700K) for a cozy atmosphere or neutral white (~4000K) when functional lighting is needed. Another key aspect is the connectors: Many inexpensive LED strips use non-standard plugs, which can make future expansions more difficult.

Smart systems offer the advantage of flexibility when properly combined. Additionally, it is advisable to plan the shelves in advance: Where will the cables be hidden? Where is the best place for the power supply? Thorough pre-planning can save a lot of work later.

Direct answer: IKEA offers LED light strips designed specifically for Platsa shelves, intended for installation on the shelves. Alternatively, universal LED strips work fine as well—just stick them on, connect, and you're done. For more customization, recessed spotlights with switches are an option.

Hello, I recently installed LED strips on my Platsa shelves – it really made a difference! I used flexible, dimmable LED strips that I could cut to size myself. The great thing is you can adjust the brightness to suit your mood. Installation is super easy thanks to the 3M adhesive tape, and with battery or USB power banks, they can also run wirelessly if you don’t have a power outlet nearby.

I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before! It’s really fun to highlight the shelves this way – almost like in a gallery. Maybe a tip: always make sure the light doesn’t glare or cast shadows, especially with open shelves. Good luck experimenting!
