Hello everyone, I’m planning to install LED lighting in my IKEA Platsa shelves and am currently looking for the best LED solution. I’m particularly interested in LEDs that integrate well into the shelving, are reliable, and provide a pleasant light that isn’t too harsh or cold—ideally with adjustable color temperature. The LEDs should also produce as little heat as possible since the modules will be installed inside the enclosed space of the shelves. I’m considering slim LED strips or small modules but am unsure which technical specifications are most important here (e.g., brightness in lumens, CRI value, wattage) and whether it’s better to use ready-made kits or individual components. I look forward to your recommendations and experiences regarding the best LEDs for IKEA Platsa shelves—especially in terms of easy installation, comfortable light quality, and durability.

The selection of LEDs for IKEA Platsa shelves should be done systematically, taking several criteria into account. First: the color temperature. A warm white LED (between 2700 and 3000 Kelvin) creates a pleasant atmosphere and suits most living environments. Second: the CRI value (Color Rendering Index) should be above 80, ideally over 90, to ensure that colors on the shelf appear natural and authentic. Third: for brightness, LEDs with at least 300 lumens per meter provide good illumination without causing glare. Fourth: since Platsa modules are often installed in enclosed, small spaces, it is preferable to use an LED type with low heat generation—such as LEDs on flexible circuit boards with effective heat dissipation. Finally, ready-made LED strips with separately available power supplies and dimmers are recommended because they simplify installation and allow for adjustments. Wiring should be routed discreetly along the edges to maintain the overall aesthetics.

To go a bit deeper: When installing in Platsa shelves, it is very important to pay attention to the width and flexibility of the LED strips, as the shelf edges can be quite narrow. Efficient cooling should not be neglected, because especially with longer light bars in enclosed modules, temperature rises can reduce their lifespan.

I recommend 12-volt LED strips with at least 60 LEDs per meter, in warm white (around 3000 K). Make sure the CRI is above 90 if you want to accurately showcase sensitive colors, such as wood textures or fabrics. The brightness should be measured so that it illuminates the shelf well without casting distracting shadows—single-color light strips without RGB mixing are better suited for ambient lighting.

Additionally, check whether the LED strips are rated IP20 or IP65, in case you have shelf compartments exposed to higher humidity—such as in kitchens or bathrooms. Most IKEA lighting like the Omlopp LED strip generally delivers about 38–40 lumens per LED, but custom DIY solutions with higher-quality strips provide better performance and longevity. Do you already have an idea of how many power supply components you plan to install or what space you have for transformers and wiring?

I like how attention is already being paid to details here – especially since I’ve often been frustrated when LED lighting didn’t create the desired atmosphere.

What makes me a bit unsure during the entire planning process is that when I think about installation, I’m afraid the lighting might end up too bright or too cool, ruining the cozy feeling in the room. Does anyone have tips on which dimmable LED strips work well for the Platsa shelves and offer a warmer, almost warm white? I once tried a set that was dimmable, but even at 50% dimming, it appeared too cool. That really disrupted the room’s ambiance.

I’m also curious whether a spot system with individual LEDs might be better than continuous strips. Maybe it’s just a matter of taste, but I’m wondering if using individual LEDs with small diffusers would allow more targeted accent lighting. I’m really interested in hearing about your experiences, especially regarding use in a room mainly intended for relaxing in the evening.
