I am planning to equip my IKEA Besta shelving unit with LED lighting to create a pleasant and functional light source inside the compartments. I am particularly interested in which types of LED lights are suitable for this kind of application. Factors to consider include the size of the LEDs, the light color (warm white vs. daylight), brightness, power supply, ease of installation within the furniture, as well as potential heat generation and durability. Overall, I am looking for recommendations on LED lights that make sense specifically for IKEA Besta units, regarding design, light quality, and installation. Has anyone had experience with specific LED strips, modules, or other lighting types that have proven effective in Besta shelves? I look forward to your detailed opinions and tips!

I’m planning to equip my IKEA Besta shelf unit with LED lighting to create a pleasant and functional light source inside the shelves. This is a very good starting point, but it’s also important to consider the integration of the LED light sources: Many LED strips commonly available on the market often have too high brightness or a cool light color, which can be less comfortable in a living space. Especially for Besta shelves, which are often used as TV furniture or in living rooms, I recommend LED strips with a color temperature between 2700K and 3000K (warm white).
Furthermore, it is important that the LED strips provide efficient and even illumination without dark spots or flickering. Some cheaper LEDs tend to have quality fluctuations in this regard. Also, pay attention to the IP rating: an IP20 rating is usually sufficient since the shelf interior stays dry.
Regarding power supply: 12V LED strips with a separate power adapter are ideal; this is safer and easier to maintain than 230V solutions. For installation, a self-adhesive light strip is practical to simplify mounting.
Personally, I prefer flexible, dimmable LED strips with high-quality LEDs, such as those from Osram or Samsung, because they offer good longevity. What are your thoughts?

- The brightness should be between 300 and 500 lumens per meter to create pleasant indirect lighting without causing glare.
- A CRI (Color Rendering Index) of at least 80 is recommended so that the colors of objects on the Besta look relaxed and natural.
- For installation, it’s important that the LEDs are placed close together, as otherwise the lighting can appear uneven.
IKEA also offers its own LED solutions that visually match well and are perfectly compatible with Besta, such as the PATRULL LED strips, which are already suitable for furniture use. A downside is that these tend to be more expensive and less flexible in length.
For those who prefer DIY, flexible LED strips with 3M adhesive backing are a solid choice. Also, the power supply should have overload and short-circuit protection to ensure safety.

I installed LED strips from IKEA under my Besta cabinets six months ago and I’m really happy with the result! The installation is super easy because the strips fit perfectly, and the light is nicely warm. You can tell they’re designed specifically for the furniture.
It’s important to pay attention when buying which types of plugs and power supplies you get. Sometimes they are meant for certain outlets, so it’s best to check beforehand.
I also like the option to dim the LEDs with a remote control because it lets you adjust the ambience flexibly. Overall, a great comfort upgrade for my living room!
Of course, if you enjoy DIY projects, you can use other LED lights, but if you want convenience, IKEA is really a good choice.

Personally, I prefer flexible, dimmable LED strips with high-quality LEDs like those from Osram or Samsung, as they have a good lifespan.A technical and objective addition: High-quality LED strips are characterized by a stable color temperature without color shift throughout their lifespan. Especially for longer strips, it is beneficial to observe fixed segment lengths and avoid strips with very large gaps between the LEDs to prevent shadowing.
For integration into IKEA Besta units, LED strips with a low installation depth are important since the shelf compartment height is limited. Here, types with a width of 5mm (0.2 inches) and a flat design are preferred.
Also recommended are LED modules with fixed spacing and strong magnetic or clip mounts that are protected against vibration damage. This can increase the lifespan for furniture with moving parts (e.g., drawers).
In summary:
- Warm white (2700K to 3000K) for a pleasant atmosphere
- CRI >80 for natural colors
- 12V system with external power supply
- Flat, flexible LED strips for installation
- Quality LEDs for long durability
These criteria should be met by IKEA Besta lighting to impress not only visually but also technically.
