Hello everyone,

we are still deciding whether to go with a concrete basement or just a tanking system. The soil survey recommends at least a tanking system. However, most of the neighbors have installed concrete basements.

Our builder initially planned for a tanking system and gave us a quote of almost 3,000 for plastering the interior of the basement. Is the cost the same or lower for a concrete basement?

As far as I know, both a black tank and a white tank refer to concrete basements. The difference is that with a black tank, the basement is fully waterproofed on the outside with bitumen, whereas with a white tank, additives are mixed into the concrete itself (and the construction is carried out somewhat differently, for example, thicker walls, etc.).

OK, then I had misunderstood the term "black tank." What I actually meant was a masonry basement with a reinforced external bitumen layer and fabric reinforcements.

We have a concrete basement constructed as a waterproof shell ("white tank"). Our plasterer is applying plaster to it, as well as to the rest of the house, without any issues.

Unfortunately, the interior finishing of the basement was not included in the price for us. This was also not clearly stated in the offer.

Anyway, we have a quote for interior plastering for a masonry basement for just under 3000.

Is it easier and maybe cheaper for a concrete basement?

The interior finishing was not included for our basement either. However, our plasterer provided us with a total quote for the entire house, including the basement. I’m not sure if it would be easier or more expensive with a masonry basement.
