ᐅ Which Ikea shelves can be integrated into the Pax wardrobe system?

Rennu2Hello everyone, I am currently exploring which Ikea shelves can be integrated into a PAX wardrobe system. Specifically, I am interested in whether there are compatible shelving systems within Ikea that can fit into a PAX without major modifications or adjustments—such as for the inside of the wardrobe or as additional shelving elements on the sides or doors. It is especially important for me to know the dimensions, mounting methods, and load capacities to ensure a safe and stable integration. Does anyone have practical experience or recommendations on which shelving systems work well with PAX and what you should pay attention to?
Basically, PAX is primarily designed for its own interior fittings, such as shelves and accessories from the PAX accessory range. Other Ikea shelving units are usually not directly compatible because the dimensions and mounting systems differ.
In detail:
- The PAX shelves are about 50 cm (20 inches) deep, which also affects their width and height.
- Systems like KALLAX or BESTÅ have different depths and fastening methods, so they do not fit directly.
- If you want to integrate shelves outside the interior space, for example on the sides of the PAX unit, you need to use custom solutions with brackets and screws since Ikea does not provide standardized interfaces for other systems.
For stability, keep in mind that PAX is designed accordingly and the shelves should be loaded according to Ikea’s specifications. Installing shelves that are not part of the PAX series carries a risk regarding durability and safety depending on the setup.
My advice: Use PAX accessories, especially shelves, drawers, and hanging baskets. If you want something different, pay close attention to the dimensions (58 cm (23 inches) internal depth), drilling hole distances, and material thickness.

If you want to integrate shelves outside the interior space, for example on the sides of the PAX, you need to use custom solutions with brackets and screwsThis is a very important point that I would like to add based on my experience. If you plan to attach shelves such as the Ivar or LACK units to the sides of the PAX, there are some technical details to consider:
- Fastening: The PAX side panels are relatively thin (about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches)), which requires reinforced screws, preferably combined with anchors in the wood or additional metal brackets.
- Weight: The PAX sides are not designed for high point loads. Therefore, lightweight items are recommended.
- Dimensions and alignment: The depth of the PAX (59 cm (23 inches)) is crucial for positioning external shelves. IVAR modules are usually 30–37 cm (12–15 inches) deep, which can be a useful complement if mounted with spacers.
I also recommend studying the exact assembly instructions of both systems in advance and using a spirit level or angle measuring tool to ensure stability and proper alignment. It would also be helpful to know what type of shelving you are planning—are you aiming more for open storage or to connect closed cabinet units on the side?
I would like to add the following to the previous explanations: If you want to integrate shelves from other series into the PAX system, it is important to consider the attachment points of the PAX side panels. The standard drill holes for PAX shelves are positioned quite strictly, making it difficult to install other shelving systems without modifications.
- One possible approach is to create additional drill holes yourself, but this must be done very carefully to avoid compromising the structure.
- Some users report that Bestå shelves are not a perfect fit but can be installed with minor adjustments, such as using shorter screws or spacer blocks.
Important: Modifications made to the furniture always carry the risk of voiding the warranty and reducing load capacity. Therefore, if you want to install specific shelves, you should measure very precisely and preferably use PAX-certified components.
Do you already have particular shelves in mind? Then the dimensions and attachment methods can be analyzed in more detail.
