Hello everyone,

I am currently considering which IKEA Platsa elements would best match my existing living room furniture. My living room has a fairly modern style, mostly light wood tones combined with white and some black accents for contrast, rather minimalist with clean lines. The room size is just under 25 m² (270 ft²), and I am mainly looking for storage solutions that are both functional and visually appealing.

It is important to me that the Platsa elements integrate well into the space, not appearing too dominant, but still providing enough storage for books, decorations, and electronics. Does anyone have experience with which combinations work well here? Maybe some tips on color choices and clever arrangements?

I am open to all suggestions—especially on the best ways to position or connect the modules. Thanks in advance!

The PLATSA series from IKEA features flexible modules that can be easily adjusted both vertically and horizontally. For your combination of light wood, white, and black, I would recommend white frames paired with doors in birch veneer or smooth white.

- For minimalist spaces, plain fronts without visible handles work well.
- You can combine open shelving units with closed cabinets to store books and electronics.
- The PLATSA components also come in different depths (35 cm (14 inches), 44 cm (17 inches)), which you can vary depending on your space requirements.

In your case, I would suggest a low sideboard section for the TV and electronics, with vertical storage units beside or above it. This creates a balance between storage and openness.

Great start here! 😄 I think with PLATSA you can get really creative, especially since you can easily customize the pieces to fit the room perfectly! If you like light wood tones, you can mix the white frames with birch doors – it creates a lively effect without making the space feel cluttered.

- For cool accents, black handles or legs could be a nice idea, giving you that black contrast without overdoing it.
- And remember, open shelves are great for displaying beautiful decorations, while closed drawers help hide any clutter.

Not sure exactly what your style is, but a bit of variation often makes things more interesting!

Thanks for the tip, that sounds quite fitting. Have you had any practical experience with how durable these birch veneer fronts are? I’m asking because there are often small children around in my household, and the fronts might get bumped occasionally.

Makes sense – I should probably do that as well. Do you think it’s better to use smaller PLATSA modules and arrange them modularly on the wall, or rather larger, continuous units?

Hello,

regarding the birch veneer fronts: These are generally sturdy and easy to maintain, but they are more prone to scratches and dents compared to pure plastic or laminate fronts. For a household with children, I would recommend a combination of birch-veneered doors and durable doors with white melamine coating. This way, you get the look of wood while having more resistant surfaces.

When it comes to the module arrangement, you should primarily consider the available space and your usage habits.

- Smaller modules offer more flexibility and allow for varying heights, which is especially useful in smaller or multi-purpose rooms.
- Larger units create a more continuous appearance but can sometimes seem more bulky.

With the PLATSA construction system, you can connect the modules or use them freestanding.

I can only confirm here how well PLATSA adapts to different living styles. I had a similar experience with my space – I wanted to create both storage and a pleasant atmosphere.

I have had birch veneer fronts in my living room for two years. You can see small scratches, but to me, that’s almost part of natural wear. It is important to avoid moisture and direct sunlight as much as possible, so the wood does not darken or warp.

I would recommend a mix: a larger unit as a base, complemented by smaller modules that you can move or adjust as needed. This way, you stay flexible and can expand the collection.
