Hello everyone, I am considering getting a new Pax system from Ikea and am having some difficulty distinguishing the truly durable models among the many options. My specific question is: which IKEA Pax variants are considered particularly long-lasting, especially in terms of material quality and workmanship? I am mainly interested in sturdy carcass materials, robust doors, and durable hinges, as the wardrobe will be used frequently. Are there certain Pax series or fronts that are known to show less wear despite heavy use? Additionally, it would be helpful to know if any models or combinations require more attention in terms of maintenance or assembly to maximize their lifespan. Thanks in advance!

Basically, when choosing IKEA PAX, it is important to note that the more robust options are usually found in carcasses made from stronger materials like particleboard with melamine coating. Doors with frames made of solid wood and glass tend to be more durable than those with MDF fronts alone. PAX hinges and fittings are generally well tested for durability, but sliding doors, in particular, tend to experience more wear on their tracks with frequent use. For maximum longevity, it is recommended to choose hinged doors instead of sliding ones and to tighten the fittings thoroughly after installation. Careful assembly is always important, as incorrect construction can quickly lead to premature wear.

A precise addition: PAX systems with carcasses made from 18 mm (0.7 inch) thick engineered wood provide more stability than thinner alternatives. In particular, models with solid wood framed fronts combined with high-quality metal hinges are considered more durable. Sliding doors are more prone to defects due to the guiding system. When under load, installing center supports on wider elements should be considered to prevent warping. Ultimately, regular checks of screws and adjustments are essential to maximize lifespan.

Hey klaus53, a few years ago I bought the PAX with white frame fronts and fixed hinges and I’m really happy with it! Very sturdy and absolutely no signs of wear after years of use 🙂 Of course, you need to be careful during assembly, but that’s true for almost any furniture! I can only recommend the versions with solid wood frame fronts—they are simply more durable than the smooth fronts! Give it a try – it’s definitely worth it!

Solid wood frame fronts are more durable. Hinged doors last longer than sliding doors. 18mm (0.7 inches) carcasses increase stability. Installation should be carried out precisely. These are the key points.

Hello Klaus, additionally, I would like to mention that maintenance also affects durability. Avoid moisture and clean the surfaces with appropriate products to protect the melamine coating. If you plan to use sliding doors, regularly check the tracks and clean them from dirt to prevent unnecessary wear. Furthermore, evenly distributing the load on the shelves can help prevent sagging and maintain stability over time. If you have any questions about assembly or maintenance, I am happy to assist.
