richard6721 Nov 2017 14:23Hello everyone, I am currently planning my wardrobe and am particularly interested in the Ikea PAX system. Since I have relatively high ceilings and want to make the best possible use of the available vertical space, I am wondering: which PAX models and combinations offer the greatest height?
I am mainly interested in the maximum height of the individual wardrobe units without any additional modifications or add-on parts, meaning the measurements that Ikea lists as standard in the catalog. Are there differences in depth or width that also affect the height? And do you have any tips on how to possibly achieve an optimal height using certain components or accessories?
I look forward to your insights and experiences, thanks in advance!

Hello Richard67,
Regarding your question: The PAX wardrobe systems from Ikea are indeed available in different heights, which allows flexibility depending on room size and needs.
Generally, the standard heights for the PAX wardrobe carcasses are:
- 201 cm (standard size)
- 236 cm (taller model)
- 271 cm (base plinth plus tall carcass or extension frame)
The 271 cm height is actually a combination of the 236 cm carcasses plus a 35 cm (14 inch) extension frame. This gives you the option to make good use of the room height with an added element. Tip: The 271 cm version is ideal if you want to build up to the ceiling without a fully custom wardrobe.
Depths (35 cm or 58 cm) and widths vary but do not directly affect the height. In fact, deeper wardrobes offer better storage space, while the height remains standardized.
For assembly, you should consider the following points:
- Measure wall height to plan possible combinations
- Include plinth height, as this adds to the total height
- Plan for any existing top units or cover panels
Conclusion: If you have high rooms and want to fully utilize the height, you should go for the 236 cm carcass variant plus the 35 cm extension frame. This gives you the best room height within the PAX system without modifications or custom builds.
I hope this helps!

- Standard: 201 cm (79 inches)
- High: 236 cm (93 inches)
- With extension: approx. 271 cm (107 inches)
The ideal ceiling height is therefore the model with 236 cm (93 inches) plus the extension. The depth has no impact on this.

This gives you the best interior height within the PAX system without modifications or custom work.I can only agree with that. Additionally, it should be noted that the combination of the 236 cm (93 inches) cabinet and the 35 cm (14 inches) extension frame is officially offered by Ikea as a system solution, ensuring optimal stability and ease of assembly.
Also, keep in mind that for very tall cabinets, the door hardware and shelves need to be securely installed to support the weight.
Maximum sizes:
- 201 cm (79 inches) (height of a single cabinet)
- 236 cm (93 inches) (taller cabinet)
- 271 cm (107 inches) (236 cm cabinet + 35 cm extension frame)
Try to use complete solutions whenever possible to avoid later issues with fit and stability.
