ᐅ Which Ikea Pax models offer the best space utilization in tight areas?

Hello everyone, I am planning to get an Ikea PAX wardrobe but face the challenge of very limited space in my apartment. My main question is: Which of the different PAX modules from Ikea are the most efficient in terms of space utilization when the available area is small and tight? I am especially interested in dimensions, internal divisions, and the flexibility of the modules to make the best use of small niches without losing space due to thick side panels or impractical depths. Additionally, it would be great if someone could share experiences with the different depth options or narrower widths. Thanks in advance for any helpful answers!

I can fully understand how frustrating tight spaces can be. I was also concerned about whether a Pax would even fit. In the end, the 35cm (14 inches) deep modules really helped me, and I organized my clothing by type. This way, the system feels just right. Sometimes it’s okay to make a few compromises with storage space to gain more room to move.

To be honest, I think the entire PAX series is a bit overrated when it comes to small spaces. Why not just go for open shelves? They are usually much more flexible and can be adjusted more quickly. Also, those 35cm (14 inch) units are so narrow that they mostly only fit short dresses or smaller items. Anyone with regular clothing will have to keep reorganizing all the time.

That’s an interesting point, but PAX offers the advantage of closed fronts, which often helps to keep the overall appearance tidy in small apartments. Open shelves are flexible, but they can quickly look cluttered.

If the look allows, that’s certainly an option. However, for the best use of space, modular cabinets like PAX, which can also be combined around corners, often help the most.

Not a big deal with the narrow PAX models. A depth of 35cm (14 inches) is perfect if you can stack items or use hanging options. Sliding doors also save space. I personally use a 50cm x 35cm (20 inches x 14 inches) module in a small room, and it works great.

One more note: If the space is really tight, it’s better to go with a 35cm (14 inches) depth PAX unit or even the Elvarli system from Ikea. It’s even more flexible.

Thanks for all the feedback so far! I’m still considering how important the type of door is to you: my room is very narrow, and the built-in sliding doors there provide about 36cm (14 inches) of depth for the doorway. So, regular doors will probably get in the way. However, I’m also reading that some sliding doors don’t even fit a 35cm (14 inches) depth. Does anyone have practical experience with IKEA sliding doors on narrow PAX units? Are there models or components that should definitely be avoided, or any installation tips?
