Hello everyone,

I am currently rethinking the design of my bedroom and am particularly interested in the IKEA Pax wardrobe systems. My main question is: Which IKEA Pax models are considered especially stable and durable, especially when the system is used over a long period and loaded with a lot of content? I have read that stability mainly depends on the depth (35 cm (14 inches) vs. 58 cm (23 inches)) and the specific side panels, but I am unsure if there are really significant differences between the various versions. I would also like to learn about experiences regarding durability with frequent opening and closing, as well as additional fittings such as drawers or internal pull-outs. Who has tips or concrete practical experience with the most robust Pax models for everyday use? Thanks in advance!

How do the different models compare? Are there significant differences in the load capacity of the shelves?

Yes, there are.

The Ikea Pax shelves fall into two categories:

- The standard shelves for the 35cm (14 inch) Pax typically have a load capacity of around 15 kg (33 lbs).
- The shelves for the 58cm (23 inch) models can support up to 25-30 kg (55-66 lbs).

These figures refer to a uniformly distributed load. This means that thicker shelves made from 18 mm (0.7 inch) particleboard in the larger model can withstand significantly higher loads.

Another tip: If you plan to store heavy items and want to be on the safe side, you can install additional shelf supports or order extra sturdy replacement shelves, which are often made from MDF and are less prone to bending.

The main advantage of the 58cm (23 inch) version is not only the greater width but also the increased material thickness, which directly impacts stability and durability.

Thanks for the tip, Lotizar! Adding extra floor supports and stronger shelves sounds like a good idea for my use case.

I will probably go for a 58cm (23 inches) Pax system and possibly even the taller version at 236cm (93 inches). That way I get more storage space and can make the most of the wardrobe.

Has anyone had any experience with assembling and mounting these larger models on the wall? Are there any challenges, especially when attaching the wardrobes to drywall?

Looking forward to your advice!
