Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to purchase a new Ikea Pax wardrobe and would like to gather as much detailed information as possible beforehand. My main question is: which models from the Ikea Pax series come with sliding doors and which with hinged doors? I am particularly interested in how extensive the range of options is, which doors are offered as standard, and whether there are significant differences in features, functions, or prices between sliding door and hinged door models. Additionally, I would like to know if certain frame profiles, colors, or material finishes are only available for one type of door.

I find the information in the catalog and online somewhat confusing at times, so I am hoping for clear and concise answers here, or even firsthand experiences. Thanks in advance for your support!

In the current Ikea Pax range, there are basically two types of doors available for the wardrobe frame: sliding doors and hinged doors.

- Sliding doors are usually intended for wider wardrobes (from about 100 cm (40 inches)) and save space when opened.
- Hinged doors come in various widths and open in the traditional way.

The models mainly differ in door design and finish, while the basic frame remains the same. This means you can, for example, order the same wardrobe frame with either sliding doors or hinged doors – but not both at the same time.

To answer the question in more detail: The Ikea Pax series offers various types of doors and door systems, each with specific technical and functional differences.

- Hinged doors (often referred to as traditional swing doors): These come in several widths, typically 50 cm (20 inches), 75 cm (30 inches), and 100 cm (39 inches). They are available in different designs and materials, ranging from solid wood look to glass or mirror, sometimes with frames or flush-mounted.
- Sliding doors: Usually consist of two or three panels that slide along a track. The sizes are also standardized, often fitting wardrobes between 150 cm (59 inches) and 200 cm (79 inches) wide.

Important to note: Sliding doors require special tracks and floor guides that are not compatible with hinged door frames. The maximum height is often somewhat limited, typically around 236 cm (93 inches).

In terms of price, sliding doors tend to be a bit more expensive due to the more complex hardware. Hinged doors are generally more flexible regarding size adjustments and interior access since they can be fully opened, providing complete access to the wardrobe.

Based on my experience, I also recommend considering the position of the wardrobe in the room, as hinged doors require significantly more clearance space to open compared to sliding doors.

Could you say how wide your planned wardrobe frame is? That would help with making recommendations.

I can understand that choosing between sliding and hinged doors for Pax is not so easy. I initially had concerns about the space requirements for hinged doors, since my apartment has rather limited room. By now, I am very satisfied with my 3-panel sliding door system, even though the installation was more complicated than expected.

Sliding doors are often somewhat more expensive because the mechanism is more complex. Hinged doors are generally more flexible in terms of size customization and interior setup, as they can be fully opened and provide access to the entire wardrobe.

I can only confirm that. For me, it was a balancing act between functionality and budget. Maybe it also depends on whether you value quick access or prefer a more elegant look.

What about you, DARYLKEO? Do you already have a suitable location in mind and an approximate wardrobe size?

It’s interesting how many people here approach door types almost ritualistically, as if sliding doors are the holy grail and hinged doors are completely outdated. I think that’s an overly simplistic view.

That sums it up well. In the end, in my opinion, it’s more a matter of space and usage than the door type itself. Sliding doors aren’t automatically space-saving, as you often can only open them partially. That’s different with hinged doors, where the full width is immediately accessible.

I completely agree with that – plus, a classic door simply looks ‘finished,’ while sliding doors sometimes create a somewhat strange feeling of a semi-open space.

I’m curious if anyone here has ever tried the combination—using cabinet frames with hinged doors in some sections and sliding doors in others—are there any good tips?
