Hello everyone, I am planning to buy a new Ikea Pax wardrobe and am deciding on the doors. Since I travel a lot for work and have little time for extensive maintenance, I would like to know: Which Ikea Pax doors are the easiest to care for, especially in everyday use with dust, fingerprints, or minor stains? I mean doors that are simple and quick to clean, durable against frequent wiping, and as resistant as possible to scratches and similar damage. I am particularly interested in how different finishes (e.g., high gloss, matte, mirror) perform in daily care. I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!
Basically, for Pax doors, the type of surface and material are the key factors. Matte finishes like the MELLOSA series are generally easier to maintain than high gloss, as fingerprints and dust are less visible. The smooth, melamine-coated front is also durable and can be easily cleaned with a damp microfiber cloth.
High gloss doors may look more elegant, but they require frequent cleaning and are more prone to scratches. Mirror doors, on the other hand, need special glass cleaners but are relatively resistant and can be cleaned quickly—except for fingerprints.
For ease of maintenance, I therefore recommend melamine-coated matte doors, since they require minimal cleaning effort.

Wow, this topic is something! At our home, I have VALLKÄRTA high-gloss doors and can confirm: they can be real fingerprint magnets. But usually, a quick wipe with a damp cloth is enough to make them shine like new again.
If you want it super easy, it’s better to go with matte, as tra_nina suggests. It doesn’t look as flashy, but it saves time and frustration.
A small side note: I avoid mirrors on the doors because they always remind me of my mess when I clean... 😅

I would like to take a closer look at the material properties of Ikea Pax doors, as the ease of maintenance is influenced by several factors:
- Melamine-coated doors: These are made from MDF panels with a plastic coating. This surface is hard, scratch-resistant, and repellent to liquids. This makes cleaning very simple since dust and dirt do not easily stick to it.
- High-gloss fronts: These are usually painted MDF panels. Although they look elegant, they are prone to micro-scratches, which can accumulate over time. Additionally, glossy surfaces clearly show every fingerprint and dust particle, so frequent cleaning is necessary.
- Mirror doors: Cleaning requires a glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Scratches are relatively rare, but smudges and fingerprints are very visible. Moreover, care must be taken to avoid streaks while cleaning.
- Front doors with foil coating: Sometimes you will find foil-coated fronts, whose abrasion resistance is moderate. The surface can peel off if cleaned improperly.
My recommendation: If you have very little time for maintenance, choose melamine-coated, matte doors. You can regularly wipe them down with a damp cloth without worrying about visible wear.
One more question for you: Should the look be more modern or classic? Some finishes are also more versatile regarding the overall interior style.

If you really have very little time for maintenance, choose melamine-coated, matte doors. You can regularly wipe them with a damp cloth and don’t have to worry about visible signs of wear. Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. This is exactly the direction I am leaning towards.
Regarding the appearance, I prefer a more modern and understated design. The furniture should fit well into my bedroom without appearing too dominant.
Perhaps someone else has experience with the new frameless options from Pax? They look very clean, but is the maintenance really easier there, or rather more complicated, especially when it comes to the doors?
